Canadian Tourist's Warning: Assault and Theft in Pattaya Bars

A retired Canadian man, Douglas, has issued a stark warning to fellow tourists after suffering a brazen assault and theft at the hands of three Thai women in Pattaya. The unsettling incident unfolded shortly after his return to Thailand on March 10, following a stay near Rompho Market in Jomtien.

His night took a dark turn after a casual outing, during which he was lured by the women to what was described as a makeshift bar. Once there, Douglas was restrained, assaulted, and ultimately robbed of 15,000 baht. Despite his best efforts to leave, a male accomplice joined the women in attacking him, leaving him with a black eye.

Douglas reported the incident to Pattaya police but faced a disappointing response, with officials expressing scepticism about taking significant action. Investigations did uncover CCTV footage showing Douglas being escorted on a motorbike after the assault. However, claims by one of the women about visiting a nearby 7-Eleven were unverified, as the store agreed to share footage only with authorities.

The victim's attempts to gather evidence, including consulting a lawyer and approaching police for further help, were met with challenges. Staff at the bar, seemingly reluctant to cooperate, echoed concerns over the incident reflecting badly on the establishment.

Douglas, aware of common scams, was caught off-guard by this orchestrated attack involving freelancers rather than regular employees. He stresses the need for vigilance among tourists visiting bars alone, recognising the risk of falling prey to similar ploys that exploit intoxication and isolation.

Although frustrated by lacklustre support from some bar staff and the police's slow response, Douglas remains committed to achieving justice. He cautions others about the potential dangers in Pattaya, imploring them to take care when navigating the nightlife, especially when unaccompanied, reported The Thaiger.

My old man once told me " kitty can lure you further than gunpowder can launch you"

he was a smart man, and I still remember his words to this day

I don't know, a night out with a bit of free spending can easily go through 15k.

I'm a cheap Charlie in general, but if you are going out in Pattaya night life ... well in for a penny, in for a pound.

What an asinine and imbecilic comment.  I have found that those making unfounded pedophilic accusations often have something hidden in their own "closet".

I think the Canadian does the right thing.

And hopefully others would do same.

And hopefully the Thai govt will come to conclusions to do something to improve safety in many ways. Bars, roads, night-life, Red light districts aso.

Come on, aka Douglas.. late at night you’re drinking and three women and you alone and you weren’t thinking something exciting and fantastic and possibly sexual was going to happen? And you felt this was a 100% guaranteed for sure thing? you were going with them with the intention of just socializing and talking about the weather ? You played your cards pal, and you lost, the house always has the advantage.

Canadians, known for their politeness.

In a land overwhelmed by words and signs of politeness.

Khap 🙏

How to explain that....

Anyone who comes to Pattaya and visits the bar scene must be very naive

Surely would have done his homework on what to expect coming to the sin city of Thailand especially with plenty of money 💰 🤑 on his person 🤡

This sounds like a fake story. However, people like 'Douglas', wandering about in the dead of night after a few drinks, need to keep their wits about them in entertainment areas, and not only in Thailand.

Yes I always take 15k out for a pint or two

Never occurred to me, but you might be right.

There are so many bars here and so many farangs who are more than happy to part with their money in these bars that there is no need for these types of scams to exist here

Sounds true to me: lack of police interest;

What would he have to gain with a false story; why would he hire a lawyer if the story wasn't true?

Bar staff keeping stum, a tidy set-up, no loose ends = good scam.

I just wonder if the reluctant police made a few bob as well.

I'm suggesting this is a fake story, in total.

He's Canadian not British it seems the Poms are great at doing that

I saw some stills from the video of the beatdown in Pattaya this morning.  The gang of Thais look to be having so much fun as they rain down blows with feet and motorcycle helmet onto the poor guy's head.  Likely they were very happy to have an excuse to attack the guy, possibly they wanted to kill him.

Violence like that doesn't come out of nowhere.  People should think carefully before choosing Thailand as a holiday destination.
