Upgraded Laptop Always Needs a Hard Restart

I wanted to upgrade my laptop by replacing the hard drive with an SSD card and add more RAM and at first planned to do it by myself, but as I had it with me when buying the components I asked the shop to do it for me for 500 Baht.

 

Surprisingly, it took them nearly all day and they re-installed a new copy of Windows plus extra software that I don't need. Anyway, now whenever I start it up I have to do a hard restart, otherwise nothing happens.

Any ideas as to why? and what I can do about it. 

I don't want to spend a whole day going back to the shop just yet.

sounds like the partition may be off.
I would shove in a thumb drive of windows and format it then start again
hate to ask but did you check the new component after you got home?

(do you ean you let it go to sleep with the lid down and upon lifting it does not kick in? if so check power options for lid and do a wee twaek before you go the reload way)

I shut it down via Windows shutdown. When I try to power on , nothing happens unless I do a hard reset.

by your description even though its a windows shutdown its not switching off
if your then hard resetting
the only way to now that for sure i guess would be noe how much battery you have 
shut it down leave for an hour go back and check battery level 

lets check we are both meaning the same hard reset holding power down 10 seconds then pressing power again to boot.

1. Make sure your power settings are configured correctly. Open the Control Panel, go to "Power Options," and check the settings for "Choose what the power button does" and "Choose what closing the lid does." Ensure that they are set to shut down the computer.

2. Ensure that your BIOS and drivers are up to date. Visit the manufacturer's website for your PC and motherboard to download the latest BIOS version and update any necessary drivers.

3. Try resetting the power options to their default settings. Open the Command Prompt as an administrator and type the following command: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes. Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.

4. Try disabling Fast Startup. Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > Uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup (recommended) > Save changes.

thats from microsoft since its windows thats doing the shutdown

TRY THIS AS WELL

Using Windows tell it to restart a few times rather than power off 
Then try the power off
it can also be the result of not full update install the restart will flush the cache

Thanks I'll have a look at the power settings later when I get 10 minutes to myself.

 

My hard reset is holding the power button down for about 20 seconds with the charger disconnected.

 

I actually checked BIOS and drivers for updates before I upgraded, but as the shop installed a new version of Windows maybe I should check again. I stood next the guy for for about 2 hours (I hate when they start changing too many settings) and later when I came back he told me that it would be some time and that he could send the laptop to me. Later, he told me that he had installed a new version of Windows ( together with quite a bit of software that I never use.)

I went into the BIOS and disabled "usb boot"

All the options in "power settings" were set to "sleep" and I have now changed to "shut down". I closed the laptop down and restarted immediately. All went well.

I was going to suggest resetting BIOS to defaults, as I imagined that the Tech had enabled USB Boot in order to install the new OS.

As an aside, which version and edition did he install?

nah, this was a windows power setting problem the laptop was going to sleep and in afew occassions the only way to get out of sleep is hard reset,
in previous versins of windows one had to also remove the battery to get it to shut down and restart.

the bios setting here was not doing anything the hard disk is on the list to
so the boot sequnece just goes through the list until it finds a boot

so metimes in install  if not done correctly the boot partitin can be off not in this case just windows

windows 24H2 build26100.3476

It seems it is Windows Pro, whereas before I used Windows home. I can see the product key has been activated, but I really don't know if it a pirate copy or not. I prefer to have a genuine version.
