American consumerism is pigs squealing at a trough.

The tit-for-tat between China and the USA has reached a level which means all trade between the countries will stop. So if China bans the export of all rare earths, America goes back to using wall telephones.

In case you are unaware, China is not the only place on Earth that has "rare earths." Nor is it the only producer.

Ever heard of legal immigration? Duh.  :coffee1:

OK, so the US will go from allowing a limited number of highly skilled immigrants to vast amounts of no/low skilled immigrants. Am I right?

You even included the solution in your own post. In case you missed it, it's the point above the one you drew a red line under.

The post I replied to applauded the fact that Trump wants to bring manufacturing jobs back to the US. Making robots do the work instead of humans kind of defeats the whole purpose.

Agreed?

I don't think Trump understands that much. He wants manufacturing to return to the US. I doubt he understands that humans will not benefit.

I agree that it's a tragedy if humans are replaced by robots but that is the capitalist way- the rich get richer and everyone else gets screwed.

It's not going to end well either way.

??????? Allowing the present illegals to enter legally to do the same work they do now is not going change much except they get paid properly.

The skilled workers will still be allowed in.

Oh, I see. So has Trump said that is the plan?

It doesn't defeat the whole purpose, but the robot question is going tot be problematic, nonetheless. Sooner than anyone seems to think, robots will take over many manufacturing jobs. This will put workers out of work not only in the USA, but around the world in developed countries. It's all part of the AI revolution and there's not really any stopping it.

Smart people in the AI world know this, and have suggested that societies will have to come up with some way to support the idled workers. Universal Basic Income, perhaps.

In ay event, even if manufacturing returns to the USA and the workers are all robots, this will help enrich America and stop the one flow of money to China.  A win for Trump in that regard.

Agreed. Rare earth is not rare, but it is very polluting which is why the west prefers to do the extraction in poor countries that don't care about the citizens health

They already have. it's called a "living wage' and it's BS. It should be called surviving wage as not much "living" will be done on the pittance.

Imagine Zardoz without the guns.

Its all part of "The Art of Deal." Countries will fall in line as soon as their economies begin to suffer. This is already happening and many countries are coming to the table.

While many have been crying and attacking Trump, his deals are happening out of sight. I don't know what the new world order will look like but I doubt it's going to be a happy outcome for Joe Average.

So Krugman and yellen don't know what they're talking about says an anonymous poster on a Thailand forum.

Lol.

Apply that same logic to anonymous posters you agree with.

Lol, indeed.

More unclear thinking. Stevenl isn't citing himself as a source or other members here. Why is that so difficult for you to understand?

Whatever you want to call it, many people will be out of jobs around the world.  How much they will pay idled workers is anyone's guess.  That's just a temporary solution, though, according to some, who seem to think that through AI and robotics, we''ll be entering an age of abundance and people will have all they need.

To me, that seems crazy, but that's the thinking.

In a perfect world.

In the real world, the rich will be doing the benefitting from behind their walls and militarised security, while the rest of us eke out lives with crumbs the rich deign to let us have.

Ask yourself whom is going to own the robots- the people or the rich? You know the answer.

You think Krugman and Yellen actually know what they're talking about?  They'r'e both biased in the extreme. People who think like they do are part of the problem, not part of any viable solution.

Why you can certainly make an argument that Krugman and Yellen have a different point of view, but you can't make an argument that Trump, Navarro and Bessent have the slightest idea of what they're doing.

They are sabateurs, completely lost in the woods.

I think you miss the point. The AI geniuses maintain that through AI and robotics, the world will be entering an age of extreme abundance, with the cost of producing goods reduced to almost zero.  People will have everything they need.

To me, that sounds like a dream, but that's the thinking.  What will it matter who owns the robots, if goods can be produced so cheaply that people will have everything they want?

Anyway, the robots are coming, along with the AI revolution.  There's some possibility it all ends badly, with AI robot "Terminators" wiping out humanity as unnecessary.

Sabateurs?  I'm not sure about that, but I suppose you could say they don't have much political savy. They may have absolutely perfect theories on how to rearrange the deck chars on the Titanic, but I'm not sure they fully realize how cumbersome the political process really is. Navarro is from academia and Bessenet is from Wall Street. Both have no real experience in the political process. Trump?  I think he has good instincts, but in this case, the headwinds from the bond market may be just too much.

They're certainly built faster than Biden's $40 billion high speed interweb.  Or California's high speed rail.

But that's beside the point.  Trump's looking for long term prosperity.  Not a short term, debt fueled sugar fix (and vote buying scheme) like the Dems.

The United States has experienced a striking surge in construction spending for manufacturing facilities. Real manufacturing construction spending has doubled since the end of 2021 (Figure 1).[1] The surge comes in a supportive policy environment for manufacturing construction: the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and CHIPS Act each provided direct funding and tax incentives for public and private manufacturing construction.

Thought you were so well informed, but of course we know MAGA and information don't go together.

China Makes Big Brazilian Soy Purchase as US Trade War Worsens

(Bloomberg) -- Chinese soybean crushers scooped up an unusually large amount of Brazilian beans this week as the escalating trade war makes purchases of US crops unviable.

Importers bought at least 40 cargoes from Brazil in the first half of this week, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified as they’re not authorized to talk to media. They booked the supplies to take advantage of a recent dip in Brazilian prices, which had rallied in previous months amid the fallout of worsening Sino-US tensions, the people said.

I was just asking and I am not MAGA. I just despise the dems more like everybody else in the usa right now. Sorry I asked. Next time i will just use google.

Not MAGA? Who really won the 2020 presidential election?

I didn't vote for Trump. As I said I simply despise everything about the dems and the left now like many Americans., I have never said anything about the 2020 election but since we are talking elections... who won in 2024? The reason for this is that many people who aren't MAGA did support Trump. Because as i have been saying the only people more despised than Trump are the dems.

China loses the american consumer, devastating. What does the US lose? If there were an answer to that then trump wouldnt have done it!

America is only 15% of China's trade in the world.

You want to know what America loses? Ask your farmers, the last trade war in trump's first term devastated them.
