Negita43 Posted June 7 Posted June 7 Three epithets I try to live by: 1. Live dangerously. “For believe me! — the secret for harvesting from existence the greatest fruitfulness and the greatest enjoyment is: to live dangerously! Build your cities on the slopes of Vesuvius! Send your ships into uncharted seas! Live at war with your peers and yourselves! Be robbers and conquerors as long as you cannot be rulers and possessors, you seekers of knowledge! Soon the age will be past when you could be content to live hidden in forests like shy deer! At long last the search for knowledge will reach out for its due: — it will want to rule and possess, and you with it!” - Friedrich Nietzsche, The Gay Science: (Gay meant something different in those days). 2. Part of the Serenity Prayer. “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference…...” - Anon (disputed) and not that I believe in God. 3. And now the end is probably near (No not Sinatra)! Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light….. - Dylan Thomas 1

Negita43 Posted June 7 Author Posted June 7 As you well know it's not meant to be taken literally but if that's the best you can do.... 1
mogandave Posted June 7 Posted June 7 “To thine own self be true.” “What do you see in them that you don’t like about yourself?” If you meet more than one a-hole in a day, it’s not them. 3

Everyone is an a-hole every now and then, but not very often, and while there are some full-time a-holes in the world, they are few and far between. So while it is possible for anyone to come across an a-hole on any given day, the likelihood of coming across two on the same day is such that it’s likely just that you’re being an a-hole today. 4 2

I just heard a song on the radio using a Nietzsche aphorism. "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger." Imagine this guy Nietzsche writing in the 19th century, and in 2025 people are still quoting him. Now that's longevity. 1

Your immune system being stronger does mean you are stronger. When you lose a leg, your arms the other gets stronger, but you’re not stronger. If yiu get hit by a bus and end up paralyzed, it doesn’t make you stronger. It’s a cute saying, but it’s a bit silly. 1
