I don't plan to do this for at least two years, but I would be very interested in spending at least a year in Thailand, studying the language, and travelling around. I'm 19 years old at the moment, and building a career for myself, so I don't want to do this till I am in my 20s, but I would be interested in knowing what visa would apply to me.

I would want to spend at least one year in Thailand, living off savings; travelling around. The minimum amount isn't a problem to raise, as long as I know what it is. Of course I would want to cover myself. I might be interested in looking into taking classes in Thai language, culture studies, etc. I am also interested in learning more of Buddhism, so I guess that I would be occupied whilst there...

I guess the place I need to start is the visa, so if there are any tips to begin with regarding finance, and legalities, I would appreciate it.

Many thanks

There's no visa available that would enable you to stay a year. Where do you live ?

The best would be a double entry tourist visa.

Each entry gives you 60 days and can be extended for a further 30,

then you hop out and back in at one of the borders,

and use the second entry. Another 60+30 days.

That will cover almost 6 months.

If you really want to study buddhism you can ordain as a monk!

Then the monastery will take care of your visa worries, and you can stay as long as you want to be a monk. Not an easy option or an easy life!!

Best to come as a tourist and look at the monkhood side of you really feel motivated.

3 mil baht special investment visa would give one year and is the only one year visa you can obtian based on the info you provided..

Unsure if you could sign on to a student course and get a year visa and perhaps not attend the course ???

Otherwise its visa runs and extending tourist visa's as others have stated.

^ Well he says he wants to study the language and a lot of schools that are certified to teach Thai (as long as you're studying 15 hours a week) will offer you a Non-imm ED Visa which can indeed cover you for a year (two if I'm not mistaken?) if extended. So yes I think it's possible! < Sorry LivingLOS didn't read your post properly, although I would add if they've got his Visa extended and he Jack's his studying in it is possible (and I've heard of it happening) to cancel the Visa, best to do it properly.

His stated requirement are way too broad and general to simply slip into a Non-Imm ED, and the Mickey Mouse schools don't make the grade to get one anyway

When he comes here he can sign up for one. Mickey Mouse? Such as? I know AUA can do it, Union can, as can many others. Learning the language like you say is a broad and general statement, but yes if you study Thai you can get a Non-imm ED as long as they're (the school) certified to teach Thai (Mickey Mouse school or not!).

At the moment it's about his only option as far as I can see?

Well ... it's a couple of years away so let's worry then :o

I would try for the elite card if I were this young man

My guess would be that the 90 day extensions @ 1900 baht a go might bugger him financially. Any votes about whether to close this tenuous topic ?
