  • What sort of deal is this?  Sweden sells military hardware but the buyer isn’t allowed to use it? I’d be buying from a different source.

Outstanding news. Any excuse to just say no to the US, their military industrial complex, and their overarching, highly arrogant hubris at this stage of the game is a great thing, and should be suppor

Below is a link to the full text of Sweden's arms export control policy, as published by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

https://www.sipri.org/sites/default/files/2021-04/sweden_arms_export_control_report_2019_english.pdf

I can't see anything in it that says Sweden must not sell arms to countries engaged in an armed conflict.

Its main provision states that:

The document then goes on to say that:

However once again, nothing in that constitutes an outright ban on selling arms to countries currently involved in military action, as far as I can tell.

And in fact, Sweden has previously sold arms to countries involved in wars, notably to the US during the Iraq War.

It's part of SOU 2024:77, which clarifies rules regarding the export of arms, and what guidelines need to be followed when deciding whether arms export is allowed or not.

Agree, not sure why they are hating on USA, when we had no skin in this game.  Thailand made their choice for fighter jets, and we moved on.  We still have a great relationship with Thailand going back at least 200 years.

Yes, even when they momentarily declared war on you and the Brits.

Nope, have you? At least the French don't send theirs to private Konzentrationslagers.

You interpreted it as being anti-American, many would interpret it as simply stating the truth and seeing things for how they really are. Sorry your thin is so skin, that must be quite painful.

No pain for me, you come off as a little spoiled boy, your hate for America is very sad, as a said there was no way that Thailand was ever going to get the F35's,

Grow up and see the reality. Chinese engineers designed the F-35 for LM. Now, they are back in China making J-35. There are no secrets on the F-35, or F-22 for that matter, that Chinese are not aware of. You Americans <deleted> that one up very badly!

Chinese engineers.....55555555555555555555555.

Dude, Chinese are good at one thing.,..more run....they steal and copy....ok.

That is all you need to know.

Agree.  He has no clue.

If the Chinese are sooooo good, he should explain their poor weapons performance when India wipe out their air defense systems.  Now, this J-35...a bad copy of the F-35, with a bad engine that they copied from the Russians....Hell, a F-15EX can wipe out any J-35 in air to air combat.

Honestly, and I say this with peace and love, I would rather go to North Korea than set foot in France, especially Paris.

So why did US refuse to sell F-35's to Thailand? Sweden's government simply follows the law of the country, as written.

Plenty of countries out there are forced to buy US hardware, because they are under the boot of the USA. Pax Americana rules OK!

As stated before, the US is not going to sell the F-35s to any country that cannot meet our strict security requirements to keep that technology away from our enemies.

Oh, so what's with those recent scandals with Chinese workers for Boeing LM and other, that now went back to China after they got what they wanted....

That Chinese J-35 looks very much like an F-35 to my eyes, except it got two engines, so maybe more like F-22.

42 minutes ago, Liverpool Lou said:

You really think that China is not already aware of every square inch of the F-35s!?

They may be, but guess what genius, they cannot copy it....look it up, the J-35 has engine issues.  No one is afraid of China.,..no one, their weapons are poor copies of Western Technology.  You don't have to believe me, but this information is all over the net.  Ask Iran and Pakistan if they are happy with their Chinese weapons.  Especially Iran.....55555555555555.  Do not eff with USA and Israel....their weapons systems are second to none.  China is still 15 years behind.  But, they are very good a propaganda for you anti American folks to digest.

Actually, I always thought that would be a perfect gift/lease/sell to Ukraine. Those Warthogs are a formidable aircraft, IMO. They would sort out the Russkies in no time. Nothing beats 30mm Uranium tipped rounds, not even 70mm armor.

Yeah, and Gripen can wipe out an F-15 any time it wants. In fact, it has done it in military exercises several times. Last time it wiped out two F-15s while the third one chickened out and run!!!

Again, I can't find where that says arms absolutely cannot be exported to countries at war.

In fact, it pretty much states the opposite, as follows.

Quote

As previously stated, the criterion of armed conflict or internal armed unrest constitutes a conditional obstacle that, according to the guidelines, does not constitute an absolute ban on exports. Instead, it is something that must be taken into account in the overall assessment when examining a case.

You didn't provide a link, but I found it anyway.

https://data.riksdagen.se/dokument/HCB377.html

Incidentally, it even mentions how the section quoted above was applied in the case of selling arms to the US during the Iraq War.

Thats a shame that sweden didnt live up to their end of the bargain. Maybe next time thailand will deal with the US, probably not though they never learn

Sweden's Foreign Affairs Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard, stated that Stockholm is keeping an eye on the ongoing border tensions but did not clarify the status of the Gripen deal. The final decision rests with Sweden’s government and the Inspectorate of Strategic Products, responsible for regulating military exports.

Anyone would play with the toys they've bought wouldn't they ? Thailand should look elsewhere and tell Sweden, Ikea and Greta to go and get stuck where the sun don't shine

You still haven't got the message.... The deal is not off, Sweden just paused it to evaluate the situation.

"The final decision rests with Sweden’s government and the Inspectorate of Strategic Products, responsible for regulating military exports."

All the military hardware exports go through the ISP, as quoted in the post above, before being accepted by the government.

But I know that many of you Americans have difficulty getting your two neurons connecting. You probably don't even know where Sweden is located. And, no, it's not in Australia.

Hasn't been "at war" in the last few weeks, either.  Border skirmishes are not "war".

Not only does an F-35 cost well over $100 million, but it's also exorbitant to maintain.

The annual operating cost per F-35A is estimated to be around $7.1 million, according to the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, although the Air Force initially projected a lower figure.

Absolutely brilliant decision to just say no to that overpriced jet fighter, and subsequent dependence on the declining empire.

Thailand didn't say, "no," to the F35. They wanted the F35. It was the US that said "no" to Thailand.

maybe they won't  be "at war" any time soon either, but the hostilities are far from over

Cambodia has no fighter jets  Why waste the money ?

I have a feeling that you wouldn't understand the military reasoning in this matter.
