A 44-year-old female construction worker was crushed to death by a road roller on the morning of 4 August while working on a road-widening project in Ayutthaya province.

The incident occurred on Highway 309, between Ban Taling Chan and Wang Noi, which is currently undergoing expansion. Police from Bang Pa-In Police Station, along with rescue personnel from the Phutthaisawan Foundation, responded to the emergency call shortly before midday.

At the scene, officers found Ms Phanit Sangsila, a native of Khon Kaen province, lying face-down beneath the heavy construction vehicle. The roller’s wheel had run over her head, leaving her with fatal injuries. Blood was seen pooling on the road beneath her. Due to the weight of the approximately 10-tonne machine, a backhoe was brought in to lift the roller so her body could be recovered.

Initial investigations suggest that Ms Phanit had been removing road markers embedded in the surface when the incident occurred. The road roller was reportedly moving forward and reversing in close proximity, and the operator is believed not to have seen her before the fatal contact was made.

Police collected evidence from the scene and said the driver of the road roller will be questioned in detail to establish the precise circumstances of the incident. Ms Phanit’s body has been transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Pathum Thani.

Reporters at the scene were not permitted to film or photograph the location and the site supervisor declined to comment on the cause of the incident.
