I met a guy last night that has been here 6 yrs (he lost his passport 3 years ago) and has never got a new one.

He is only 30 odd, so what happens now?

More interested than concerned.

Anyway heard of this type of thing?

What would or could he do?

Cheers

Short answer - apply for a new one. Then leave, paying the fine. Return if he has to and hope to gain entry. Then stay legal. Alternatively, keep walking the tightrope hoping to stay lucky. I would imagine if he was stopped by police and unable to produce a passport it would mean near automatic incarcaration.

It is risky not having a passport .

Although I was asked by a policemen recently to show my passport (for not wearing a helmet) , I did not have it on me .

They did not asked any further questions though . Actually it is very rear they ask you for it , but in case they stand by it

and not having one at all and staying illegal , wow I do not like the thought what will happen next .

There are ways to clear it up and it is discussed many times on Thaivisa before , Sunbelt gives a service to help them out .

Some only say go to the airport and pay the fine , I am not so sure it really works out like that although it seems it can be done. First of all get the new passport and ask at the embassy what to do next and go further with the next step .

Ritti,

step#1 your acquaintance will need to scrape together some documents proving their identity and go to their respective embassy to obtain replacement passport.

step#2 it will be necessary to go to suan phlu immigration and have the original entry stamp replaced in the passport. it might be wise to have sunbelt assist with this.

as you can see, it's not possible to proceed directly to the airport. it's my understanding you will be required to pay 20k at suan phlu and show outbound flight ticket.

better take care of it now, they are really cracking down on these guesthouses/apartments to keep records of registering their foreign tenants. understandably so.

I'd be more curious to know how a 30 year old has managed to live in Thailand for 6 years already.

True, but at that time of night I was more "the saviour than the investigator" ha ha happens after a few drinks

I was more interested the next day (whether it's true or not" but I am sure that after 3 yrs they would just say "oh,pay the 20000 b over stay fine and we will give you a new visa"

in the near future if not already, i think some of these multi-year overstayers are going to be looking at mandatory i.d.c. time. this issue isn't the walk-in-the-park it's been made out to be. you have to step back and see thailand's security problems in a larger context.
