Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s “iron-clad” friendship with Cambodia during a high-level meeting in Beijing on 26 August 2025, welcoming King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk to Zhongnanhai for talks aimed at deepening bilateral ties.

 

The meeting coincided with commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, which King Sihamoni attended as a guest of honour. President Xi praised Cambodia’s enduring support and recalled his own state visit to Phnom Penh in April, describing the reception as “warm and unforgettable”.

 

Xi emphasised the resilience of China-Cambodia relations, noting that the partnership has weathered shifting global dynamics and remains a “valuable asset” to both nations. “In a time of transformation and turbulence, it is important for China and Cambodia to stand together more firmly,” he said, calling for enhanced cooperation and the acceleration of an “all-weather community with a shared future”.

 

The Chinese leader also reiterated China’s backing for Cambodia’s sovereign development path, pledging support for its long-term peace and stability. Foreign Minister Wang Yi was present at the meeting, underscoring its diplomatic significance.

 

In response, King Sihamoni and the Queen Mother expressed their deep appreciation for China’s hospitality and acknowledged the historical importance of the commemorative event. They lauded China’s contributions to global peace and reaffirmed Cambodia’s strategic commitment to the bilateral relationship.

 

The Cambodian royals echoed Xi’s vision for a shared future, highlighting the outcomes of the April visit and pledging to strengthen ties across political, cultural, and economic spheres.

 

As global uncertainty looms, the reaffirmation of China-Cambodia unity signals a continued alignment between the two nations, rooted in historical solidarity and mutual respect.
