UK Joins Allies to Reinstate UN Sanctions on Iran Over Nukes

Given the growing nuclear tension, France, Germany, and the UK have initiated the process to reinstate UN sanctions on Iran. The move, endorsed by the US, follows failed diplomatic attempts to regulate Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Tehran swiftly condemned this decision, warning of potential repercussions.

The trio, known as the E3, informed the UN Security Council that they are invoking the snapback mechanism established by the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, which is also referred to as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA). This mechanism allows for the reapplication of all UN sanctions that were lifted as part of the deal. Previously, the US had withdrawn from this agreement, leading Iran to violate its terms.

The foreign ministers of the E3 announced that Iran's failure to comply with the JCPoA is deliberate, stressing that its enriched uranium levels pose a threat to global security. Iran's Foreign Ministry criticises this escalation and argues it could disrupt cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Iran insists that its nuclear program is solely for peaceful energy purposes, but the increased levels of enrichment suggest otherwise.

Under the 2015 accord, Iran promised to restrict its centrifuges, significantly reduce its uranium stockpile, and limit enrichment levels. In return, it received numerous financial incentives. However, since the US's departure in 2018, Iran's uranium enrichment has surged dramatically, violating the initial agreement.

Since the snapback process lasts 30 days, Iran has a limited timeframe to address the sanctions. The sanctions trigger expires in October 2025, prompting the E3 to take action now. A British official clarified the decision was influenced by Iran's noncompliance and a lack of adequate diplomatic response.

In a letter to the UN Security Council, the E3 urged Iran to participate in constructive negotiations aimed at resolving the situation. They emphasised that the sanctions are merely a reimposition of previously agreed-upon measures, not new ones, according to CNN.

IAEA chief Rafael Grossi expressed hope for renewed inspections, noting the opportunity to establish a verification mechanism within the month. Inspectors returned to Iran after conflicts with Israel put inspections on hold, although a comprehensive agreement on access remains pending.

The US, in support of the E3's decision, called for Iran to abandon its ambitions for nuclear weapons and pursue peace. Israel's Ambassador to the UN praised the move, seeing it as a significant step to curb Iran's nuclear progress.

The reimposition of sanctions is a critical moment in international efforts to control Iran's nuclear program, which has potential impacts on global nuclear stability and regional dynamics.

The way this will go is Sir mug of beer Keir' will issues a strongly worded letter, followed by an invitation of a  state visit for the Ayatollah 🤔

Yeah right. As if non-EU countries care what E3 says. When will they realise that the days of wielding power is over. Most countries do business among themselves and couldn’t care less. SnapBack activation what a joke. Iran was apparently compliant and it was USA/Europe that didn’t hold their end of the bargain. They tried to trick Iran into believing a deal is in the making while the attacks were being planned. Can’t blame the Ayatollah for proceeding with the A Bomb idea. Next you hear from him will be a declaration that goes something like this “say hello to my lil’ fren”

North Korea developed nuclear weapons. The world couldn't do much. Nothing happened.

Pakistan developed nuclear weapons no one did anything. Nothing happened.

We should be more concerned about the only country in the world to use nuclear weapons twice.

More worrying is the other country that stole the USA nuclear program and is in possession of nuclear bombs illegally and will use them if its back is against the wall. It’s getting closer to being desperate for its survival due to its regional domination wishes that aren’t going to plan. They call it the “Sampson option”. JFK paid the ultimate price for trying to stop them from acquiring nuclear weapons capability.
