North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is en route to Beijing for a grand military parade in his iconic armoured train. The green train, synonymous with the secretive Kim dynasty, is shrouded in mystery and intrigue and has helped generations of the family travel both domestically and internationally.

Kim's departure from Pyongyang on Monday was confirmed by North Korea's foreign ministry. He was accompanied by top officials, including Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui. State media released images showing a cheerful Kim Jong Un aboard the train, seated at a table adorned with the North Korean flag.

The train, famously used by Kim’s father, Kim Jong Il, who was averse to flying, carries a storied history. In 2002, Russian media revealed the train’s green exterior with yellow stripes during Kim Jong Il's visit to Russia amidst a temporary easing of sanctions. Reports from that time highlighted opulent onboard meals, including French wines and gourmet seafood, but this luxury ended as sanctions returned in 2003. North Korea now faces widespread poverty and famine.

Known for its sturdy build and strict security, the train trudges at 60 km/h (37 mph), as reported by Chosun Ilbo in 2009. The same report highlighted its conference rooms, audience chamber, bedrooms, satellite phones, and flat screens, underlining its dual role as a mobile office and diplomatic venue.

Kim Jong-un has frequently used this train for foreign trips, including his 2023 visit to Russia to meet Vladimir Putin. State media shared glimpses of the train's luxurious interior, showcasing polished wooden floors and a decorative doorway. Footage from 2022 depicted him working and relaxing on the train, captured by Yonhap, a South Korean news agency, reported CNN.

The historic train also featured in a diplomatic engagement with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in 2018, with meetings held onboard on pink couches, according to North Korean media. Domestically, it is used in state propaganda depicting the Kim family engaging with citizens.

To commemorate its significance, a life-sized model of a train carriage is displayed in a mausoleum near Pyongyang, alongside the remains of Kim’s father and grandfather.

With this train journey, Kim Jong Un continues the legacy of his predecessors, merging tradition with diplomacy as he rolls into Beijing.
