I'm a 30 year old Australian citizen. I'm self-employed, with a handful of businesses online that provide my income. I have a Thai fiancee and want to relocate temporarily to Thailand.

As an Australian, I can enter 30 days without a visa as a tourist. I gather from what I've read here and other sites that I want a Non-Immigrant "B" visa, but if you're self-employed, how much would a letter from your employer mean? :o

If I were to do 30-day visa runs, instead of 90, until we're married, would that cover it?

Or would I come to regret it when they want to know how I'm supporting myself?

You can not stay longer than 90 days in any six month period using 30 day visa exempt entry. A work permit/visa would require company set up so probably not an option for a short term stay (if that is what you mean by temporary). You should not have any problem obtaining tourist visa from Vientiane or Penang so each of those would cover you 60 plus 30 day extension and once married you could obtain non immigrant O visa to cover a 90 day stay if still staying here.
