A dramatic incident unfolded in the bustling Kim Yong Market in Hat Yai, Songkhla province, yesterday, leaving both locals and authorities baffled. At around 3.30pm, a 25-year-old French national, identified only as Anu, shocked onlookers by stabbing himself with scissors outside a popular chicken rice restaurant.

Officers from Hat Yai Police Station were alerted to the unusual event and arrived at the scene alongside rescuers from the Tong Sia Siang Teung Foundation. Anu was found kneeling on the footpath with a severe stomach wound. Rescuers swiftly administered first aid before transporting him to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Witness accounts reveal that Anu was initially seen walking alone along the pavement when he unexpectedly dashed into the restaurant, seized a pair of scissors, and stabbed himself three times outside on the walkway. The motive behind his actions remains a mystery, as authorities await his recovery before conducting further questioning.

Police are exploring various angles, with some officers suggesting possible connections to cult beliefs, although no definitive conclusions have been drawn. The incident draws attention to a worrying trend of self-harm among foreigners in Thailand, sparking discussions about mental health awareness and support for travellers.

This episode is reminiscent of another puzzling case in Pattaya last April, when an American man stabbed himself while perched on a traffic island. Bizarrely, he continued reading a book afterwards, which reportedly delved into themes of the afterlife and dangerous locations worldwide. Police have yet to determine if this case, or a separate October incident involving a Danish man self-harming in a Bangkok hospital's food court, are linked by similar motives or underlying issues.

The public and investigators alike have speculated on potential links to cult activities or drug use, though concrete evidence remains elusive. These incidents underscore the challenges authorities face in understanding such behaviour, especially when cultural and linguistic barriers come into play.

As Anu's condition hopefully stabilises, the police intend to gather more information from him directly. In the interim, this episode serves as a stark reminder of the mental health challenges that can accompany expatriate life and travel.

Songkhla's local community, while rattled by the incident, has expressed wishes for Anu's swift recovery and greater empathy for individuals battling personal demons in foreign lands. The incident has also reignited conversations around the necessity for comprehensive mental health support systems for tourists and expatriates alike.

Ultimately, the events at Kim Yong Market reflect broader concerns about mental health resources available to those far from home. As investigations continue, it is crucial for authorities to consider these aspects to provide safer environments for tourists and to foster understanding of the complex factors that contribute to such distressing actions.

This ongoing investigation will hopefully shed light on Anu's motives, providing clarity not just for the authorities, but also for a community keen to ensure the safety and well-being of its visitors.

Should have told him he had 10-minutes to stop before calling the EMS services.

Most likely a woman involved or too much Yaba

French???The thai guy said he didn't know if he was European or might a Malaysian!

I guess i french passport holder from another country of origin.

Nuts !

Bon voyage, Frenchy😎

I think it's probably quite likely that he went off his medications, and he was experiencing some sort of delusional episodes, perhaps genuine schizophrenia. Anyone who stabs himself three times in the stomach has some very, very serious issues, that have either never been dealt with, or have not been dealt with properly.

The picture made it look like a pipe sticking out of his chest.

I thought to myself, "Sacre Blue!"
