Two teenagers have been ordered by a Shanghai court to pay 2.2 million yuan (approximately 10.9 million Thai baht) after urinating into broth at a Haidilao hotpot restaurant in February. The incident was widely criticised when a video of the prank was posted online by 17-year-olds, although there was no evidence anyone consumed the contaminated soup. Haidilao, China's biggest hotpot chain, decided to compensate diners who visited the restaurant shortly after the event.

In March, Haidilao claimed losses exceeding 23 million yuan, citing the compensation paid to affected customers. A court ruled against the teens, finding them guilty of infringing upon the company’s property rights and damaging its reputation. The court also criticised the parents for neglecting their guardianship responsibilities, instructing them to cover the compensation.

The fined amount breaks down into 2 million yuan for operational and reputational damages, 130,000 yuan for losses related to tableware and cleaning, and 70,000 yuan for legal costs. The court stated that any extra compensation Haidilao gave to its patrons was their independent choice, and the teenagers were not responsible for these additional costs.

Haidilao had offered refunds and additional cash compensation to over 4,000 patrons who dined there between 24 February and 8 March. The incident prompted the restaurant to replace equipment and conduct thorough cleaning and disinfection. Known for its exceptional customer service, Haidilao has rapidly expanded from its first location in Jianyang, Sichuan, to over 1,000 outlets globally.
