A German man investigated in the Madeleine McCann case was released after serving a separate sentence, police confirmed. Known as Christian Brückner, the suspect had been jailed for raping a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal. Police vans accompanied Brückner as he exited Sehnde prison in northern Germany.

Brückner is under investigation for the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann from Praia da Luz, Portugal. German prosecutors suspect murder, assuming McCann is dead. Despite this, Brückner has not been charged and denies involvement while the investigation continues. He remains a suspect for the UK’s Metropolitan Police, having declined an interview with them.

Brückner previously lived in Portugal’s Algarve region, near where McCann vanished. He faced unrelated charges last year for sexual offences in Portugal between 2000 and 2017 but was acquitted due to unreliable witnesses and media influence. His lawyer, Friedrich Fülscher, argues sufficient evidence would have led to charges long ago.

The court in Hildesheim will enforce conditions on Brückner post-release, requiring an electronic tag, regular reporting, and surrendering his passport. Brückner also faces an appeal in Oldenburg for insulting a prison staff member, previously receiving a six-week sentence.

Key Takeaways

  • Brückner released, still a suspect in McCann’s 2007 disappearance.
  • No charges yet filed, investigation ongoing across three countries.
  • Faces post-release restrictions and upcoming court case in Germany.
