Update: The Cambodian press mistakenly reported that the suspect was French. This is not true. He is Finnish. His name proves it.

A Finnish national has been detained in Phnom Penh following a violent knife attack that left two people seriously injured. The incident, which unfolded on the morning of 20 September at Condo Belle 3 in Chroy Changvar District, has shocked residents and prompted swift action from Cambodian authorities.

According to reports, the suspect—identified as 47-year-old Marko Antero Rantapaa—allegedly launched the attack after a dispute over a tuk-tuk fare. When a receptionist refused to lend him money, Rantapaa reportedly turned violent, stabbing her and a security guard who tried to intervene.

Footage released by Fresh News shows the chaotic aftermath, including the moment Rantapaa grabbed a woman by the neck before being restrained by bystanders and military police. Both victims sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital.

The Phnom Penh Military Police responded promptly after receiving emergency calls from residents. Rantapaa was arrested at the scene and transferred to the Criminal Investigation Bureau for further questioning.

Local officials have condemned the attack, describing it as an isolated but deeply troubling incident. While violent crime involving foreigners remains rare in Cambodia, the case has reignited concerns about mental health and support services for expatriates.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to press charges under Cambodia’s criminal code. The French embassy has yet to issue a formal statement.

The incident has left many in the Chroy Changvar community shaken. “We’ve never seen anything like this,” said one resident. “It’s frightening to think it happened in broad daylight.”

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

Very violent attack on the women receptionist, what surprised me is in the video you see the receptionist and a few other people standing very close to him and he was holding a large meat cleaver. Looks like the police gave him a few hits with a stick as his face was covered in blood when they had him in handcuffs.

Foreigners with mental health issues are rife in south East Asia.

The Finnish guy is finished, hope he gets therapy in prison
