Trump to Address UN as France Recognises Palestinian State

France has formally recognised a Palestinian state, a move hailed as a major diplomatic shift in the Middle East conflict. President Emmanuel Macron announced the decision at the UN in New York, declaring that “the time for peace has come” and condemning the ongoing war in Gaza. The recognition aligns France with a growing list of countries—including the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal—that have taken the same step in recent days.

The announcement comes as US President Donald Trump prepares to address the UN General Assembly, where leaders from Jordan, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia are also set to speak. Washington skipped a French-Saudi summit on Monday dedicated to advancing a two-state solution, a meeting also boycotted by Germany and Italy.

France’s move has intensified international pressure on Israel over its Gaza offensive and settlement expansion in the West Bank. Israel has strongly opposed recognition, arguing it rewards Hamas for its 7 October 2023 attack that killed 1,200 people and left 251 taken hostage. In response, Palestinian officials point to the devastating humanitarian toll, with Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry reporting over 65,000 Palestinians killed since Israel’s retaliatory campaign began.

At the UN, Macron urged an immediate end to the war, the release of Israeli hostages, and a renewed push for a two-state solution ensuring “Israel and Palestine side by side in peace and security.” Saudi Arabia, speaking through its foreign minister, echoed that stance, while EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the creation of a Palestine Donor Group to help rebuild Gaza.

UN Secretary General António Guterres called the situation in Gaza “morally, legally and politically intolerable,” stressing that a two-state solution remains the only viable path to lasting peace. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, speaking via videolink after the US revoked his visa, demanded a ceasefire and insisted Hamas must disarm and relinquish control of Gaza.

Key Takeaways:

  • France has formally recognised a Palestinian state, joining a wave of countries backing two-state solution.

  • Trump and other world leaders, including those from Jordan and Saudi Arabia, will address the UN General Assembly this week.

  • Israel rejects recognition, while international calls grow for peace, a ceasefire, and Gaza reconstruction.

I didn't realize that the UN had comedy breaks between serious discussions. This should lighten the mood.

I wonder if France will become a vassal state to Islam like the UK has become? So very sad.
