Cambodia’s APSARA National Authority has issued a public warning urging tourists and transport operators to exercise extreme caution when visiting the Angkor Archaeological Park, as severe weather continues to batter the region.

Heavy rainfall, strong winds, thunder and lightning have swept across northwest Cambodia, raising fears of landslides and falling trees within the UNESCO-listed heritage site. The alert, based on forecasts from the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, was released on Wednesday and applies to all visitors and drivers in the Siem Reap area.

“In this regard, the APSARA National Authority would like to call on members of the public, national and international tourists, drivers of all kinds of vehicles, and all tourist transportation service providers to exercise a high degree of caution,” the statement read.

Drivers have been specifically advised not to park under trees, as weakened limbs pose a serious hazard. The warning comes at a time when Angkor is experiencing a surge in tourism, with nearly 670,000 international visitors recorded in the first eight months of 2025, generating over $31 million in ticket sales.

The Angkor complex, spanning 401 square kilometres, is home to 91 temples dating from the 9th to 13th centuries. It remains one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic cultural destinations, drawing thousands daily to marvel at its ancient architecture and spiritual legacy.

The APSARA Authority, which oversees the site’s preservation, has not announced any closures but is closely monitoring conditions. Travellers are encouraged to check official updates and avoid risky areas during storms.

With the monsoon season still active, safety remains paramount for those exploring Cambodia’s treasured landmarks.

Possibly the best moment to visit the temples - nobody in sight, no noise, just you and the oozing history of a thousand plus years ....... epic!
