Von der Leyen Warns: NATO Ready to Blast Russian Jets

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has warned that NATO is prepared to shoot down Russian fighter jets if they enter allied airspace.

“My opinion is we have to defend every square centimeter of territory,” von der Leyen told CNN on Wednesday. “If there’s an intrusion in the airspace, after warning, after being very clear, of course the option of shooting down a fighter jet that is intruding our airspace is on the table.”

Her remarks echo those of U.S. President Donald Trump, who told reporters at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday that NATO should take down Russian planes if they cross into member states’ skies. Asked directly, Trump replied: “Yes.”

Poland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Radosław Sikorski backed the president’s comments with a blunt “roger that.”

The statements follow a series of Russian drone and fighter jet incursions into NATO airspace in recent weeks. Poland’s military, with NATO support, shot down multiple drones, while Russian planes entered Estonian airspace, prompting Tallinn to invoke Article 4 of the NATO treaty.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Mike Waltz reinforced the message: “The United States and our allies will defend every inch of NATO territory.”

Von der Leyen stressed Russia is deliberately testing Europe: “That’s a hybrid war that we’ve experienced for many years. And as I said, it’s a decision of NATO, but I would be very clear — you don’t touch our territory.”

Takeaways:

  • EU chief Ursula von der Leyen says shooting down Russian jets violating NATO airspace is “on the table.”

  • Trump endorsed the same approach during his UN meeting with Zelensky.

  • Poland’s foreign minister signaled strong support, saying “roger that.”

  • Russian drones and jets have recently violated Polish and Estonian airspace.

  • U.S. vows to defend “every inch” of NATO territory amid escalating tensions.

Great.

But next time it happens if you don't blast the jets, you've made the situation worse!

Looks like von der Leyen wanted her own 5 minutes of fame, as she made a claim about an organisation where she has no relation with.
