Macron Set to Announce New French Prime Minister Soon

French President Emmanuel Macron is poised to announce a new prime minister within the next 48 hours, according to the Élysée Palace. This decision comes amidst widespread speculation about potential new elections in France. The move follows outgoing Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's declaration that the threat of dissolving parliament is dissipating after extensive discussions with various political parties.

Lecornu, who resigned on Monday, is the latest in a line of French prime ministers to step down amid a fragmented parliament. He indicated that efforts to find common ground have been ongoing, with the essential aim of avoiding another election while securing a budget by year-end. Despite his resignation, Lecornu remains key to Macron’s immediate plans, albeit he hinted at stepping down soon.

Since the snap elections in July 2024, France has struggled with a hung parliament, complicating the passage of vital legislation. Lecornu's predecessors fell victim to confidence votes tied to austerity-driven budgets. France faces a towering national debt of €3.4tn, equivalent to 114% of its GDP, a pressing issue for any new government.

As potential new leadership steps in, the political landscape remains tense with factions from the radical left and far right demanding drastic change. Lecornu's attempts at forming consensus have found limited success, and political stability appears elusive. Marine Le Pen's National Rally and the France Unbowed party have voiced strong opposition to Macron's current government.

The possibility of coalition shifts remains uncertain, with Socialists being eyed as potential supporters. Meanwhile, Macron’s silence since Lecornu’s resignation has drawn criticism, underscoring a challenging period for France’s leadership. Gabriel Attal, a close Macron ally, has called for an independent mediator, reflecting cracks in former alliances.

Key Takeaways:

  • Macron plans to appoint a new PM to stabilise France’s government.
  • Tensions persist as political factions demand Macron's resignation.
  • France grapples with high national debt and a divided parliament.
