Chiang Mai Airport has adjusted its flight schedule for the Yi Peng festival, with the last flights operating at 19:00 to avoid potential hazards from floating lanterns. The airport expects over 32,000 passengers daily during the festival, a 17% increase from normal levels. Additional staff have been deployed to assist passengers and promote the use of self-service systems.

The airport announced these measures on 31 October 2025. Director Karun Thanakuljiraphat of Chiang Mai Airport, under Airports of Thailand (AOT), highlighted the need to maintain safety during the lantern release period. He also highlighted that the airport is ready for the increased numbers with self-service options include automated check-in machines, automated baggage drop systems and facial recognition checks to streamline passenger processing.

As of 31 October 2025, a total of 161 flights have been cancelled or rescheduled. This includes 65 cancellations, 41 domestic and 24 international and 96 rescheduled flights, 64 domestic and 32 international. Additionally, 44 special flights have been added to accommodate returning tourists after the festival.

The airport has increased runway and taxiway inspections from six to eight rounds per day to remove lantern debris promptly. Staff are monitoring the release of lanterns closely and can clear any hazards immediately after reports from air traffic control or pilots. Random alcohol tests for airport personnel are also being conducted to uphold safety standards.

In promoting local culture and environmental awareness, the airport has decorated terminals with natural materials and Lanna handicrafts from 1–7 November 2025. On 4 November, lotus flower krathongs will be demonstrated and coconut shell krathongs distributed to passengers at the domestic arrivals area. These activities follow the royal initiative of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit in promoting sufficiency and environmental conservation.

Director Karun added that all airlines have completed flight adjustments before 19:00. The increased activity and Yi Peng events in central Chiang Mai may cause traffic congestion around the airport and passengers are advised to allow extra travel time and follow staff instructions for safety.
