Penang Visa/train To Kl/air Ticket Requirment

Featured Replies

Hello,

Hoping all you experts can advise me. I am a newby (Australian passport) in Bangkok on a Type 'O' visa who has been following the threads about tourist visas, onward ticket requirement etc with interest.

I am flying to Penang for a tourist visa at the end of this month (my Type 'O' expires on 31st Aug and no more extensions) and in October am intending to travel by train to KL on my way back home to Oz. My questions are:

1. If I am leaving Thailand by train why do I have to have an onward air ticket when applying for my tourist visa in Penang? Or will Air Asia/Thai Consulate accept the fact I am travelling by train and will I have to have a ticket to prove it?

2. Is it safe to travel by train to KL given the situation in the South? (I have also asked this on the travel forum.)

I know the issue about onward tickets keeps being raised but .........

Do not believe Malaysia, Singapore or Laos require onward tickets to issue a tourist visa (at least for most nationalities).

As said in tourist section trip should be safe by rail as long as you use the Hat Yai/Butterworh link.

Thank you again Lopburi- you're everywhere!

...have been to Penang last week via Bangkok-Butterworth route and it was a breeze even at Thai/Malay

immigration. But if you are leaving on a weekend suggest you purchase ticket in advance as the train

gets fully booked - especially the lower berth sleepers.
