Trump’s Shadow Hangs Over Key State Elections

Voters in New Jersey and Virginia are selecting governors in races viewed as early tests of US voter sentiment following President Trump's contentious tenure. In New York City, Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist at 34, challenges Andrew Cuomo, running as a centrist independent. California sees a decision on whether Democratic legislators will redraw the state's congressional map, a move that could shift control of the U.S. House after the midterms.

The voting timetable begins in Virginia at 7 p.m. ET (0000 GMT), followed by New Jersey, New York, and California. Former President Obama has urged Democratic victories, critiquing Trump's policies during last-minute rallies in New Jersey and Virginia. Key issues include Trump's immigration stance and trade tariffs, with some voters actively citing these as influencing their decisions.

In New Jersey, Democrat Mikie Sherrill, a congresswoman and ex-Navy pilot, faces off against Republican Jack Ciattarelli, a former state lawmaker. Meanwhile, Virginia's Abigail Spanberger appears ahead of Republican Winsome Earle-Sears. Despite Trump's absence from the ballot, his influence continues to shape voter preferences, as demonstrated in Stafford, Virginia, a pivotal region from the previous presidential election.

In New York, Mamdani leads in polls over Cuomo, with Curtis Sliwa, the Republican candidate, trailing behind. California's Proposition 50, which seeks to redraw the congressional map to switch five Republican seats, is likely to pass. The outcomes from these elections offer a glimpse into voter mood but are unlikely to predict next year's midterm results.

Trump's influence remains significant, though polling shows 57% disapproval of his performance. Democrats are leveraging varying tactics, with candidates like Spanberger focusing on Trump's policies, while Mamdani emphasises progressive agendas. For Republicans, the challenge lies in balancing Trump's influence with appealing to moderates.

Key Takeaways

  • Voter sentiment post-Trump is under scrutiny across multiple states.
  • Democrats aim to harness opposition to Trump in gubernatorial races.
  • California could see significant political shifts based on Proposition 50.

So far looking like a clean sweep for the dems in Virginia the only one that’s close is the attorney general spot with the dem leading by a slim margin.polls just closed in jersey.

Looks like the Republicans are getting whipped in jersey as well hasn’t Ben called yet but they have a 10 point lead with over 50% of the vote in.

One would expect the Dems to do well as these are mostly 'Blue' states, but it's still great to see Trump getting thumped.  A 'Blue' wave next year is still unlikely, but there's a chance! 🙏

While we wait for  Trump’s Body Hangs Over Wherever

The ketchup will be flying tonight!

I do hope that the golden cherubs splattered tastefully displayed throughout the Oval Office are washable...

Who needs a ballroom when The Oval becomes a bawl room?

IMO all his moaning about victimization ("I whine until I win") is making him look like a wimp and the Dems look like they are kicking his butt.  This is great for a party who at times thinks victory is "hey, we didn't lose by as much as we expected" and a Senate minority leader who thinks taking action is "writing a strongly-worded letter."

Jail to the chief!

The madness of MAGA is coming to an end. The Dems have delivered a bloody nose to the far right thugs. This is just one battle in the war against the far right but signs are that elsewhere e.g. Holland and Wales voters are rejecting bigotry.
