Cambodia’s Water Festival draws crowds across provinces

Cambodia’s Royal Boat Festival has drawn hundreds of thousands of visitors to Siem Reap, Battambang and Banteay Meanchey, with local authorities reporting a surge in domestic tourism and a festive atmosphere across the country.

In Siem Reap, more than 368,000 people — including nearly 10,000 foreign visitors — took part in celebrations from 4 to 6 November, according to the provincial tourism department. Cultural shows, concerts and street performances lit up the Royal Residence Garden and the banks of the Siem Reap River, where boat cruises and a floating market will continue until 8 November.

The festival, held annually to mark the end of the rainy season and honour Cambodia’s river spirits, is one of the country’s most cherished traditions. This year’s edition was organised by the Siem Reap Provincial Administration in partnership with the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia.

Battambang also saw a strong turnout, with 123,955 visitors recorded over the same three-day period — a 12% rise compared to last year. Of these, 875 were international tourists, up nearly 8% year-on-year. Visitors flocked to temples hosting Dal Ambok ceremonies and explored the Clean City 2025 art festival along Road 2, organised by Far Polwelu Selak and the provincial administration.

Meanwhile, in Banteay Meanchey, thousands gathered to celebrate Bon Om Touk — the Water and Moon Festival — despite the absence of traditional boat races. Colourful lanterns lit up the riversides, and families enjoyed evening strolls, food stalls and music at public venues.

Officials say the surge in domestic travel is a welcome boost for the local economy, especially in provinces still recovering from the pandemic’s impact on tourism. With floating markets, art festivals and cultural programmes continuing through the weekend, organisers hope to maintain momentum and attract even more visitors.

The Royal Boat Festival remains a powerful symbol of Cambodia’s cultural heritage — and this year, it’s also a reminder of the country’s resilience and community spirit.
