A 69-year-old British woman, Lindsay Sandiford, departed Indonesia after a deal between Jakarta and London allowed her repatriation on humanitarian grounds. Sandiford, originally sentenced to death in 2013 for smuggling 4.8kg of cocaine into Bali, left the country early Friday morning alongside another British prisoner, Shahab Shahabadi, serving a life sentence for drug offences.

The plane carrying Sandiford and Shahabadi left Bali at approximately 12:30 am, confirmed Indonesian official I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram. The decision to repatriate Sandiford was made last month, with Indonesian Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra stating the agreement was due to her age and poor health. Sandiford will now serve the remainder of her sentence in the UK.

At a press conference in Bali's Kerobokan prison, Britain's deputy ambassador Matthew Downing clarified that Sandiford would be subject to UK laws and procedures, though he did not comment on potential legal processes she might face. Sandiford, present in a wheelchair, did not address the media and kept her face covered.

Downing highlighted the reciprocal nature of the accord, allowing Indonesia the option to request the return of Indonesians incarcerated in Britain, though no such requests have been made. Over the past year, Indonesia has released other foreign nationals on death row, including individuals from Australia, France, and the Philippines, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways:

  • Lindsay Sandiford and Shahab Shahabadi were repatriated from Indonesia to the UK.
  • Sandiford was sentenced in 2013 for smuggling $2 million worth of cocaine.
  • The repatriation agreement allows Indonesia to request the return of nationals from the UK.
