Thaksin Shinawatra, a pivotal figure in Thai politics and former de facto leader of the Pheu Thai party, has been ordered by the Supreme Court to pay 17.6 billion baht in back taxes. This verdict relates to the sale of his telecom company, Shin Corp. The ruling adds another layer of legal challenges for Thaksin, currently serving a prison sentence following his return from 17 years in self-imposed exile.

Thaksin's return from exile has been marked by continued legal battles and public scrutiny. The Supreme Court's decision contrasts with previous rulings by the lower tax court and Appellate Court, which had annulled the earlier tax assessment. In addition, Thaksin previously faced a significant asset confiscation in 2010, amounting to 46 billion baht. This situation underscores the ongoing complexities and controversies surrounding Thaksin's legal matters.

Pheu Thai MP Korkaew Phikunthong expressed dismay over the court's decision, highlighting it as part of broader actions against Thaksin. He lamented Thaksin's contributions to the nation being overshadowed by legal troubles, which have led to his exile and imprisonment. Korkaew condemned the overall handling of Thaksin's cases, suggesting a detrimental impact on the nation's governance and public morale.

Looking forward, the legal and political ramifications of this ruling are vast. With Thaksin's imposed taxes and prison sentence, questions arise about potential appeals or further legal actions. The broader political climate may also be affected, as debates over justice, governance, and economic strategies continue to unfold in Thailand, reported Thai Newsroom.

What has Thaksin done for Thailand except filling his own and his family pockets?? The 17 billion tax he has to pay is in his possession and every tax office wants their part but never everything of the whole money he earned.. It is just a part, so Thaksin will no go bankrupt of it..
