US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is set to engage in critical discussions with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara. This meeting aims to "intensify" peace negotiations amidst escalating tensions in Ukraine. Zelensky emphasised the urgency of ending the war and expressed a focus on resuming prisoners' exchanges.

Turkey has played a mediating role between Ukraine and Russia, but this time, no Russian representatives are scheduled to attend. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that President Vladimir Putin is open to future conversations, though none are currently planned. This meeting is a part of Zelensky's tour of European capitals, where he's been soliciting support amid increasing Russian aggression, evident by recent strategic military advancements in Ukraine.

Domestically, Zelensky faces significant challenges. Key members of his administration are under scrutiny for alleged involvement in a criminal scheme, causing a crisis that threatens to deepen further. This comes at a critical time as the European Union prepares to decide on unblocking a substantial €140 billion loan to Ukraine, tied to the confiscated Russian assets.

Despite numerous attempts to advance peace talks, Moscow and Kyiv remain at odds about the terms of a resolution. Russia continues to demand Ukraine's withdrawal from several regions, a condition that Zelensky fiercely opposes due to security concerns. Previous negotiations involving Witkoff have been contentious, leading to strained relations after accusations of bias toward Russian positions.

With the fourth anniversary of Russia's invasion approaching, efforts for a ceasefire remain fragile and unpredictable. Recent high-level meetings have failed to yield significant progress, and while back-channel communications between US and Russian officials persist, a breakthrough continues to be elusive.

Key Takeaways:

  • US Envoy Witkoff joins Zelensky in Ankara to push for peace.
  • Russia absent from discussions, open to future talks.
  • Domestic issues pose additional challenges for Zelensky's leadership.
