Cambodia rocked by prison break and press freedom row

Phnom Penh is facing twin crises after a violent court escape and a press freedom scandal drew sharp criticism at home and abroad.

On Tuesday morning, six Vietnamese prisoners were brought to Svay Rieng Provincial Court for hearings. Security footage shows a woman handing one of the detainees a pistol as they stepped out of a prison van. Shots were fired at guards before the group fled in a waiting vehicle. Authorities returned fire but failed to stop them.

One prisoner, Le Thanh Vinh Luong, was recaptured within an hour when the getaway car crashed into a ditch. The other five remain at large. Officials confirmed all six had been charged with drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms.

The incident has already raised questions about security lapses within Cambodia’s prison system. But the fallout deepened when a journalist who filmed police behaviour towards a female Vietnamese suspect linked to the escape had his licence revoked.

The footage, which went viral, showed officers laughing while touching the detainee’s face and cheek. Cambodia’s Ministry of Information responded by cancelling the journalist’s accreditation and urging the public to stop sharing the clip.

That move has sparked outrage in Vietnam, where commentators accuse Phnom Penh of silencing the whistleblower instead of addressing misconduct. Social media communities and rights advocates insist the suspect, though accused of smuggling firearms to the prisoners, remains entitled to protection from harassment and degrading treatment.

One officer has reportedly been given a lifetime suspension, but critics argue the government’s focus on censorship overshadows accountability. The controversy has placed Cambodia under scrutiny on two fronts: the security failure that enabled a daring escape, and the public relations crisis over the treatment of a foreign female detainee.

Observers warn the issue could escalate beyond social media, with the potential to strain Cambodia–Vietnam relations if raised through diplomatic channels.
