The Criminal Court has granted a third extension to prosecutors for filing their appeal in Thaksin Shinawatra's lese-majeste case. Prosecutors now have until 19 December to file their appeal against Thaksin's acquittal under Section 112 of the Criminal Code. The development reflects ongoing efforts to address legal intricacies in this high-profile case.

Thaksin, the former Thai prime minister, faced charges following a 2015 interview in Seoul, South Korea, which allegedly contained defamatory remarks about the monarchy. Due to the incident occurring outside Thailand, the Office of the Attorney-General is responsible for managing the case. The Criminal Court acquitted him of these charges on 22 August this year.

On 19 November, just ahead of the appeal deadline, prosecutors from Criminal Division 8 requested additional time to file an appeal. The Criminal Court's decision extends their deadline to 19 December, aligning with the need to carefully prepare the appeal petition. This decision allows prosecutors additional time to ensure that the documentation is thorough and free of errors.

Recent reports have surfaced suggesting Attorney-General Ittiporn Kaewthip's involvement, purportedly leading the push for an appeal. The focus for prosecutors remains on crafting a comprehensive argument to contest the court's earlier decision. The case continues to draw attention, given its legal and political ramifications.

With the new deadline set, observers await the next developments. This extension reflects the complexities involved when dealing with cases of such a sensitive nature. Stakeholders will watch closely as the appeal process unfolds in the coming weeks, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Prosecutors have until 19 December to appeal Thaksin's acquittal.
  • The case involves alleged lese-majeste remarks made by Thaksin in 2015.
  • The Attorney-General's office manages the case due to its international aspect.

Brown Envelopes!

Hey Tony,

Have you made too many enemies?

It seems that the rules may have changed and the Brown Envelopes are no longer working for you the way they used to?

They found a tax case to drain your wealth, and they're not giving up on this one either.

Now that they have you, are they gonna milk you for every last Satang and still never let you out?

Shoulda stayed in Dubai?

Perhaps the prosecutors will do a better job than in the court of first instance where they were somehow unable to present convincing evidence to the court in what would probably have been an open and shut case, if the defendant were a mere mortal.  Whether you agree with the existence of an LM law, as it stands, or not, it does exist in Thailand and, as such, should be applied equally to rich and poor.

I could be wrong maybe towards the end of this  sentence the next  term will start inside

Nowt to do with Mr T’s problems but the number of posters on here who consider themselves oh so witty by just mentioning brown envelopes is tedious.

Maybe that's "The picture in the attic".

Are all the photo-op images of Thailand's Dorian Gray?
