Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was arrested in Brasília on Saturday amid allegations of a plan to escape house arrest. Authorities say he tampered with his ankle bracelet using a soldering iron. This arrest occurs just days before his scheduled prison term for a coup attempt.

The Bolsonaro case has sparked criticism from the US, with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau expressing grave concern on social media. Landau accused Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes of exceeding judicial norms. This sentiment reflects the ongoing tensions surrounding Bolsonaro's prosecution.

Brazil’s Federal Police executed the preventive arrest warrant following a request and subsequent Supreme Court approval. Sources suggest a vigil, led by Bolsonaro's eldest son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, in front of his residence prompted security concerns. Bolsonaro's legal team plans to appeal, denying any escape intentions.

The Supreme Court released a video allegedly showing Bolsonaro admitting to damaging his ankle monitor. Justice Moraes has demanded an explanation from Bolsonaro's defence team. The video depicts Bolsonaro acknowledging the use of a soldering iron, claimed to be out of mere curiosity, not for escape.

Bolsonaro’s attorney argues that escape was impossible under constant armed surveillance. The legal team contends that the ankle monitor controversy is a deflection, as the former president remains heavily monitored. Bolsonaro's health has been cited as a concern, given the stress and conditions of imprisonment.

Having been sentenced to 27 years for his role in the 2023 coup attempt, Bolsonaro has consistently claimed he is the victim of a political witch hunt. His conviction includes inciting government building attacks and conspiracy against Brazil’s democratic system. Recent convictions of military officials related to the coup highlight the extensive legal actions underway in Brazil.

US President Donald Trump, a well-known Bolsonaro ally, expressed regret over the situation, aligning it with his history of attempting to modify trade tariffs in favour of Brazil. As political and legal processes unfold, Bolsonaro's situation remains under global scrutiny, reported CNN.

Key Takeaways:

  • Bolsonaro arrested for allegedly tampering with his ankle bracelet.
  • US expresses concern over the Brazilian judiciary's actions in the case.
  • Bolsonaro’s legal team denies escape plans, citing his constant surveillance.

Good and keep that traitor there!!

Applied a soldering iron to his ankle bracelet "to see what happens"?

Truly they walk amongst us!

Yet another trump acolyte hits the dust.

Bolsonara daring act to escape likely came from a signal for quick asylum approval by Trump. Somewhere in Trump's desk is an executive order for Bolsonara's asylum. Criminal minds.

Bolsonaro should have seen this coming.

He should have seen what coming? That his attempt to escape would be fail?

Trump isn't my hero.

A 70 y.o.man with a soldering iron playing around with something on his ankle?  I was waiting for the part where he had to be rushed to the hospital to be treated for burns.  More likely he had an accomplice.

:clap2:
