West Ham United is mourning the death of their iconic legend Billy Bonds, who passed away at the age of 79. Bonds, a true Hammers hero, holds the record for most appearances, having played 799 matches for the club. His leadership helped secure two FA Cup titles in 1975 and 1980.

Bonds joined West Ham in 1967 from Charlton Athletic for £47,000 and spent 21 years as a player, later managing the team between 1990 and 1994. A family statement described Bonds as a "kind, loyal, selfless, and loving" person who cherished his time at West Ham. The club expressed their sorrow, remembering him as a "courageous, inspirational, lion-hearted leader."

Within his career, Bonds also lifted the old second division title and was honoured with an MBE for his services to football in 1988. Despite never playing for England, his contributions to the club were monumental. Fans voted him as the club's greatest ever player in 2018, and he received West Ham's first lifetime achievement award in 2013.

In 2019, the club named a stand at the London Stadium after him, recognising him alongside the likes of Bobby Moore and Sir Trevor Brooking. Bond was deeply touched, considering it a great honour. During West Ham's league game against Liverpool, players wore black armbands, and a shirt bearing Bonds' name was placed in front of his dedicated stand.

Forward Jarrod Bowen and manager Nuno Espirito Santo expressed deep sadness at his passing, with Bowen acknowledging Bonds as possibly West Ham's "biggest legend." Former midfielder Joe Cole also paid tribute, remembering Bonds' kindness and lasting impact on the club.

A full tribute to Bonds will occur at West Ham's next home match against Aston Villa, as fans remember his enduring legacy, reported the BBC.

Lovely tribute at the West Ham game yesterday.

No England cap. What a disgrace.

True.

In fairness, England had a fantastic team back then though. Literally world beaters.

He'd walk into today's side of overpaid, knee taking, rainbow wearing, diving, one footed, robotic, over coached, average players.

Bit late now.

I can remember standing at the North Bank at Upton Park watching him play, he always gave it his all.

One of the best players never to be capped by England, yes at the time England had a good team, but he was still playing when England did not qualify for the 1974 and World Cups1978.

RIP Bonzo.
