Starmer Promises Rayner's Cabinet Comeback After Tax Scandal

Sir Keir Starmer confirmed Angela Rayner would make her cabinet comeback, after resigning amidst a tax scandal. Rayner, who was previously deputy prime minister, stepped down in September after underpaying stamp duty on her £800,000 Hove flat. An investigation cleared her of integrity issues, yet cited inadequate tax advice against ministerial standards.

Sir Keir Starmer paid tribute to Rayner in an interview with The Observer, praising her as "hugely talented" and a key figure in the Labour movement. Starmer hails Rayner's story of rising from poverty as an unparalleled example of social mobility. Starmer expressed his wish for her return, stating: "Yes. She's hugely talented."

Previously, at the G20 summit, Starmer had expressed his desire for Rayner’s return "at some stage." Lucy Powell replaced Rayner, who had not been active in politics since her step-down, as the deputy Labour leader. Rayner has remained mostly silent, only speaking once in the House of Commons since leaving her roles.

Ministers altered Rayner's intended amendment to the employment rights bill, delaying the implementation of new protections against unfair dismissal. However, after consulting with Business Secretary Peter Kyle, she decided to withdraw the amendment.

In reaction, Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden praised Rayner on Sky News, acknowledging her significant talent and welcoming her return, while emphasising that the decision rests with the prime minister.

Looking forward, Starmer's categorical endorsement signals a likely cabinet return for Rayner, suggesting her political role may soon expand. Her involvement in future legislative discussions, particularly around employment rights, remains anticipated.

Key Takeaways:

  • Angela Rayner is set for a cabinet return, confirmed by Keir Starmer.
  • Rayner resigned over a stamp duty error but retained integrity.
  • Her comeback is supported by Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden.

Scraping the barrel already, nobody better in the party?

They had more than a decade to prepare for eventual governing and look  at the state of them. It's pathetic.

She's a great fit for Starmer's Labour.

Classless.

Dishonest.

Lacking intelligence.

The morals of an alleycat.

How could 2 tier Keir deny a comeback for someone who so perfectly encapsulates everything that Labour stand for?

Excellent news.

A talented and important voice in the Labour Party.

Which is precisely why haters are going to hate.

It's not really a case of feeling salty Chomps.

It's that I do not want to see a chain smoking, beer swilling, tatted up, lying tax dodger in the cabinet of my country's government. A government that is destroying the nation in record speed. In my opinion, intentionally.

As a Brit hating American I can see why you'd support her comeback though. You share a common goal, it's normal that you would champion such a move.

I would have thought Starmer would have been happy she was sidelined, Rayner is as embarrassing as Trump is to the USA........😬

Like Trump, Rayner is very popular with the base.  I'll be delighted to see her return to frontline politics.

Labour still has a base?

Recent polls would suggest otherwise.

Lots of people in the UK swill beer, smoke cigarettes and have tattoos. Many of those are, like Raynor, from working class backgrounds.

Having people who share the life experiences of the vast majority of the population in parliament is a good thing.

Raynor is guilty of not taking expert tax advice in a complex trust matter, she has paid her taxes.

What you imagine might be my nationality is not the subject of discussion, and as for ‘Brit hating’ that’s more in your wheelhouse, you seldom miss a chance to run the place down.

The thread is about Angela Rayner, Chomps - not "Reaves" (Reeves). 😄

Don't worry Chomps, I will continue to be right as we watch this Labour government continue to disintegrate and Reform come to power. I will remind you each step of the way, just like I did with Brexit and Trump.

And I’ll remind you of the inevitable negative consequences for anyone other than the hyper wealthy and Putin.

I think you are correct.

Rayner doesn't want to be a has been cabinet member on the back benches.

If Starmer doesn't give her a job, she's likely to launch a leadership contest, which she might just win, with the backing of the left of the party.

Re-appointing Rayner will be one step closer (hopefully) to the imminent demise and dismissal of this pathetic government.

NO,

They have actually managed to be worse than the other lot in record time.

I don't say Reform UK party is a magic bullet, I say it's our best, last hope of resurrecting the country.

She can't even string a sentence together coherently

Now, now. That's no way to speak of Reform and their leadership.

It is remarkable—almost impressive, in a bleak sort of way—that someone who so frequently struggles to deliver a coherent sentence is now being quietly ushered back into relevance.

One might have assumed that her resignation, prompted by the political and ethical controversies that surrounded her at the time, would have encouraged a dignified retreat from public life.

Yet here we are, with Starmer apparently attempting to reintroduce her through the back door, as though the public simply misremembered the criticism, scrutiny, and allegations that forced her departure in the first place.

It’s a bold strategy—if the goal is to demonstrate that lessons have neither been learned nor even briefly acknowledged.

Rayner bought an £800,000 flat in Hove in May 2025.

Later it emerged she had paid the standard rate of stamp duty (≈ £30,000) when under rules for second properties the rate should have been higher — leading to an underpayment of about £40,000.

Then she has the cheek to blame advisers, you or I, would be arrested and charged with fraud.

And where has she suddenly gained all this wealth?

As stated, I don't think they are a clear solution to the massive woes of the UK, but anything has to be better than where we are now.

Putin is hyper wealthy and has more money than Musk or Bezos.

Has she paid the stamp duty yet? The last I heard she had not paid it.

Starmer's "authority" is having the backing of labour unions and they've already signalled that they're not willing to back him as PM. So it's not too difficult to join the dots here and see. why he's bringing Rayner back into the fold so soon and so warmly.

However, once she's back on the leash in Cabinet, can she be trusted to not pull the rug from under him? She's certainly not qualified enough or politically savvy to engineer her ascent but, like Starmer, she's a sock puppet for those that do hold the reigns.
