Iranian security forces have reportedly "violently arrested" Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi, sparking international concern. Mohammadi, 53, was detained in Mashhad along with other activists, as confirmed by her foundation. The Nobel Committee has demanded that Iranian authorities clarify her whereabouts and release her without conditions.

Narges Mohammadi, awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her advocacy against female oppression in Iran, was previously held in Tehran's Evin prison. She was temporarily released in December 2024 for medical reasons but was expected to return to complete multiple sentences. Her arrest occurred at a memorial for Khosrow Alikordi, whose mysterious death has prompted calls for an independent inquiry.

The memorial saw the arrest of several activists shouting slogans like "death to the dictator." Mohammadi's husband, Taghi Rahmani, described the arrest as a violent act against human rights, suggesting it was a form of revenge. Muhammad recently criticised the Iranian authorities for intensifying repression and controlling personal freedoms.

She had warned the Nobel Committee about threats she received from regime agents, cautioning that her safety was jeopardised unless she ceased her public and international advocacy. Despite continuous arrests, Mohammadi has remained defiant, refusing to comply with oppressive demands like wearing the mandatory headscarf, reported the BBC.

This volatile situation highlights ongoing tensions in Iran as authorities increase crackdowns on dissent. The international community is closely watching the events, urging Tehran to provide transparency and protect human rights.
