Myanmar military says hospital it struck was being used by armed

Myanmar’s military is facing intense international condemnation after admitting it carried out an air strike on a hospital in Rakhine state that killed 33 people. The army insists those killed were armed fighters and their supporters, not civilians, but witnesses, aid workers and the United Nations say the victims included medics, patients and family members.

The attack targeted the general hospital in Mrauk‑U, a historic town now controlled by the Arakan Army, one of the most powerful ethnic armed groups fighting the military. In a statement published by state media, the junta claimed the facility had been used as a base by the Arakan Army and the People’s Defence Force, describing the strike as a counterterrorism operation.

The UN rejected that account, calling the bombing part of a wider pattern of attacks on civilian infrastructure since the country’s civil war intensified. UN rights chief Volker Türk said the strike could “amount to a war crime” and demanded an independent investigation. The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said he was “appalled”, noting that operating theatres and the main inpatient ward had been destroyed.

Rakhine has become one of the fiercest fronts in Myanmar’s conflict. The Arakan Army, which seeks autonomy for the Rakhine ethnic minority, has seized most of the state since launching a major offensive in late 2023. Its gains include a key regional military headquarters and 14 of Rakhine’s 17 townships.

The region carries a painful history. It was the site of the 2017 military crackdown that forced more than 700,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to Bangladesh, and tensions between Buddhist Rakhine communities and the Rohingya remain unresolved.

The Arakan Army has vowed to pursue accountability for the hospital strike, saying it will work with international organisations to ensure justice. The attack comes as the military government ramps up air operations ahead of elections scheduled for 28 December, which opponents say are designed to entrench army rule rather than restore democracy.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since the 2021 coup, with large parts of the country now engulfed in conflict as resistance groups continue to challenge military control.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

It works for the Israelis so why not try.

These absolute heathens would say anything to cover up their nasty actions and genocide. There are certain people and certain groups in this world that have zero credibility, and everything they say must be doubted, and questioned and presumed to be a lie.
