Sondhiya Urges Trump to Apologise & Stop Intervening in Thailand

A Thai political activist has formally demanded an apology from US President Donald Trump, accusing him of spreading false information about injuries to Thai soldiers and interfering in Thai–Cambodian affairs. The move has heightened diplomatic sensitivity amid ongoing border tensions and claims involving landmines and civilian impacts.

On 14 December, Mr Sondhiya Sawasdee submitted a letter outside the United States Embassy on Wireless Road in Bangkok to US Ambassador to Thailand, Mr Robert F. Godec. The letter called on President Trump to apologise to Thailand, Thai citizens and Thai soldiers after comments posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform claimed that seven incidents in which Thai soldiers stepped on landmines were accidents. Mr Sondhiya said the remarks caused damage to the reputation of the Thai military and to Thailand’s national dignity.

The controversy stems from statements attributed to President Trump alleging that the seven landmine incidents, which left Thai soldiers injured, including seven who lost limbs, were accidental. Mr Sondhiya argued that the incidents occurred on different dates and occasions along routine patrol routes, making it implausible they were accidents. He cited evidence and international discussions under the Ottawa Convention on anti-personnel mines, claiming Cambodia was responsible for laying the mines after cutting border fencing.

Mr Sondhiya said he was acting under Thailand’s 2017 Constitution, Section 50, which obliges citizens to protect the nation, religion, monarchy and national honour. He accused President Trump of making irresponsible statements that undermined Thailand’s sovereignty and demanded that the United States cease involvement in bilateral Thai–Cambodian matters. He also criticised Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for commenting on the situation, saying Malaysia should not intervene as Mr Anwar no longer holds the ASEAN chair.

The activist further raised concerns about approximately 7,000 Thai nationals allegedly prevented from returning from Poipet, questioning whether they were being used as human shields. He asked what responsibility the United States would take, given its awareness of alleged criminal activity in the area, including scams, gambling and money laundering.

Daily News reported that Mr Sondhiya said he expected the embassy might not formally accept the letter but insisted on submitting it to show that Thai people rejected President Trump’s comments. He concluded by questioning whether attacks on US personnel by ISIS would also be described as “accidents,” and called on Washington to clarify its position and accountability.

Key Takeaways

• A Thai activist has demanded a formal apology from President Trump over comments on Thai soldiers injured by landmines.

• The complaint was submitted on 14 December to the US ambassador in Bangkok, citing constitutional duties and national dignity.

• The issue adds diplomatic strain amid Thai–Cambodian border tensions and concerns over detained Thai nationals.

Time the rest of the world told Trump to naff off.

More and more of his "subjects" are openly voicing their disgust with his nonsense.  It's only a matter of time before words turn to action.  Even members of the GOP are openly rebelling.

Ooh, the Don won’t like that… if he hears about it. Thailand does need to take a dose of humble pie and sort this S out, however. The two countries are babies.

So while others have turned this OP into a hate Trump rhetoric. Has anyone at all questioned why Trump would make such comments? Surely he has better intelligence working for him in the region to know exactly what is going on with this fighting and why it is happening.

Why does an activist have to make suck a demand to the US president (regardless of who it is) when clearly the Thai government could have made such a request?

The Thai are also being exclusive who can or can not hear evidence as to what the Thais claim is really happening. Kicking out Malaysia from helping with negotiations?

One would think any help is better than no help at all? Malaysia is not pro-Cambodian so could be impartial.

Evidently his better intelligence has failed him big time.  The whole world, except for few diehards, thinks Trump is a joke.  By the way,a few of the diehards are members of this forum.

The real question is where is China?! Thailand and Cambodia are Chinese allies, not US.

They've done a big disappearing act.

'Activist' Sondhiya? Never heard of him. He'll be waiting a long time. The US Ambassador stepped down December 1.

Nice to see a Thai citizen saying sensible things and taking sensible action.

If it happened a billion times more often Thailand would be a vastly better place ... for ALL its citizens.

Sadly any post or news article mentioning President Trump does indeed get all the haters out, he does live rent free in some of their heads!😅

They are lying low in case Cambodia or Thailand want to ask for a bailout.😅

They don't like dishing out cash unless there's a distinct advantage to themselves.

He's just a do-gooder with too much time on his hands.

Prancing about outside a police station with a camera and multiple media set up, and him in his best suit.

No one will pay attention to this nonsense, it will just make himself feel better in the mirror.

Well you know the Thai hierarchy, they want fairness as long as it's going to script their way.

They are quick to throw the baby out with the bathwater when it isn't.

Why would you assume Trump listens to anybody? It has been endlessly reported that he cannot deal with written reports longer than a single page and has zero attention span for opinions other than his own. He isn't about learning the details of a problem and making a logical assessment about how to proceed. He makes snap judgements that will show him in a good light and portray him as a strong leader. Which he is not. He doesn't actually care about anything other than putting his name on something. Hence his "concern" for the Thai-Cambodia dispute. It's almost laughable.

Help who? US tariffs will lower the value of the USD against the THB. Basic economics.

In order to apologize one has to admit that they've been wrong, and I don't think Trump's ever done that in his entire lifetime. Everything he does is ego driven, and the man has never acted out of altruism, nobility, dignity, grace, decency, caring, wisdom, or common sense.

Always expect lies from him, always expect nonsense, and always expect the worst. That's just who and what he is. A truly horrific human specimen.
