Kim Jong Un Celebrates Troops' Return from Russian Duty

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un welcomed back troops from the 528th Regiment of Engineers, who recently returned after a mission in Russia. According to the North's KCNA news agency, Kim praised their "heroic" actions during a 120-day deployment, fulfilling orders from the ruling Workers’ Party. The event showcased soldiers disembarking from an aircraft, with Kim personally greeting one soldier in a wheelchair.

The unit was dispatched in early August to the Kursk region of Russia amidst Moscow's conflict with Ukraine. Under a mutual defence pact, North Korean troops reportedly assisted Russia by clearing mines and supporting combat efforts. Despite the North Korean media reporting nine casualties, other sources claim over 6,000 North Korean soldiers have died in the conflict.

Senior military and party officials attended the Pyongyang ceremony on Friday, where Kim awarded the regiment the Order of Freedom and Independence. Kim also honoured the nine fallen soldiers as Heroes of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Kim lauded their "absolute loyalty" and commended their political discipline and unity, highlighting them as exemplary forces.

As North Korea continues to publicly commend its troops' contributions to Russia's war efforts, state media previously aired footage of Kim draping flags over soldiers' coffins in apparent repatriation ceremonies. This highlights North Korea's ongoing commitment to its alliance with Russia during the Ukraine conflict, reported CNN.

Key Takeaways

  • Kim Jong Un personally welcomed the returning engineering troops from Russia.

Yes, even Putin's Russia would be preferable. Unless you're at The Front.

Poor, poor bastards.

Dear Leader, I will lay down my life for you, so you can grow a third chin. :jap:

The KPA 528th Engineering Regiment spent 120 days clearing mines and explosives in Kursk.

They were not on the front lines fighting Ukraine.

'By mid-January 2025 it is estimated North Korea had 1,000 KIA, and a total of 4,000 casualties.

South Korea's spy agency estimates that some 2,000 soldiers deployed by North Korea to fight for Russia have been killed.'

so now they're even shorter

Some came back? The numerous families of those killed… unlikely any word, or perhaps just a few lines in a generic letter.
