Zelenskyy Drops NATO Bid In Shift Aimed At Ending Ukraine War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has abandoned Kyiv’s long-standing ambition to join NATO, offering instead to accept Western security guarantees as part of a potential deal to end the war with Russia.

The move marks a major strategic shift for Ukraine, which has long viewed NATO membership as the ultimate safeguard against further Russian aggression and has enshrined that goal in its constitution. Speaking ahead of talks with U.S. envoys and European allies in Berlin, Zelenskyy described the change as a significant compromise by Kyiv.

“From the very beginning, Ukraine’s desire was to join NATO,” Zelenskyy said in remarks to reporters via a WhatsApp chat. “But some partners in the U.S. and Europe did not support this direction. Today, security guarantees instead of NATO membership are already a compromise from our side.”

Zelenskyy said Ukraine is seeking legally binding guarantees from the United States and European partners, including what he described as “Article 5-like” commitments from Washington, alongside security assurances from countries such as Canada and Japan. He argued such guarantees could deter any future Russian invasion.

The shift aligns with one of President Vladimir Putin’s core war demands. Moscow has repeatedly insisted Ukraine renounce NATO ambitions, accept neutrality, and bar NATO troops from its territory. Russian officials have also demanded written Western assurances that NATO will not expand further east.

However, Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine has not agreed to cede territory, despite Russian calls for Kyiv to withdraw from areas it still controls in eastern Ukraine. He said a ceasefire along current front lines could be a “fair option,” but stressed that Ukraine is not holding direct talks with Moscow.

The talks come amid renewed diplomatic pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration has pushed for a peace deal critics say initially leaned toward Russian demands. Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner are expected in Germany for discussions with Ukrainian and European officials.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is hosting Zelenskyy and European leaders for a summit in Berlin, as allies warn the coming days could shape Ukraine’s future and Europe’s security for decades.

Key Takeaways

  • Zelenskyy says Ukraine is ready to drop NATO membership in exchange for binding Western security guarantees.

  • The shift meets a key Russian demand but Kyiv says it will not concede territory.

  • U.S. and European talks in Berlin are seen as a critical moment in efforts to end the war.

FINALLY!! So thanks to Trump playing hardball with this guy he has finally started to want peace.

Holy moly that took way too long.

I can't see any reason why Zelenskyy cannot also promise to 1) hunt down any Nazis left in Ukraine and 2) ensure the safety of Russian speakers in Donbass.

If those promises are made today then that's all of Putin's objectives met and there is no reason to continue the war. We could have a ceasefire announced immediately and then a schedule for the planned and orderly withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine in due course.

However, call me cynical but I don't think that Putin will buy into this plan.
