I was miserable when I spent a month there last year. Going to a restaurant, even if you can afford to splurge, feels like you just got ripped-off. The everyday expenses chip away at you, day after day.

I returned 2X right after I retired (25 yrs ago) so sticker price shock wasn't much at all.

But now, if I peek at restaurant menus of places I frequently visited then, yea, sticker shock hits hard.   If returning, I'd have to start investing again, if wanting to have the same comfort level that I have here now.

Not something I'd prefer to do, as rather just sit around here, doing nothing at all :cheesy:

Well, I do have another name for them but I got banned last time I used it.

Most people in Thailand spend most of their time looking at a phone.

I was recently in the US for a month. Most people are fairly sour, and bitter these days. No humor, serious, downcast, and they just do not look like their lives are particularly fulfilling. And hyper inflation is out of control. They are admitting to over 3%. It is likely closer to 20%. Prices are stupid. And between Me Too and Covid women have basically shut down. Good looking, successful friends of mine there cannot even get dates.

Here, some people seem to be struggling. But, they are still somewhat even minded, and many are quite pleasant. Many have maintained their light heartedness, and their sense of humor. And I can walk into a restaurant and (harmlessly) flirt with a gorgeous 23 year old waitress, and she is all smiles. And the restaurant does not cost me an arm and a leg. Life here is just so much more pleasant. As long as I keep my head in the sand over local politics, all is good.

As an American was recently in the US working, I would be only be willing to live here if I was getting paid $3 million a year.

It is a rather joyless place. It is all about the money. It is a great spot if you want everyone 10 years younger than you, referring to you as sir. All my single friends here are struggling to find a date. It is a great place if you like women who are more masculine than you are, and find it very difficult to manifest the dignity within femininity.

Lastly, it is very expensive now. A friend who has a place in both Monaco and London said on his recent visit to LA, that it was more expensive than either of those spots now. Don't consider moving to America unless money and value are not an object. And don't even get me started about labor costs there.

Well what got me this time when arriving back right before Christmas, was how dar it was, and how tired, stressed everyone around me on the train, while walking in the streets, and where the smiles where gone.

Trying to call some few friends, and everyone is busy and caught up in daily life with family, work and school, and this is depressing. People in the west, do more and more things they believe they have to, but do not want to do.

So another great reminder when I doubt my future life in Thailand. I will be back 😄

the only things that worry me little bit, is the strong baht, but managed to transfer last 7 months high, so saved 100k on that one. April, May and October seems to be good month statistically to make transfers without that being the absolute truth.

These are friends you keep.

It was boring pre-Covid too but has now been properly wrecked by political correctness, suiting only a certain type of minority/mindset.

This.

💯0%

I went back to the States 13 years ago for my son's wedding. That was the last time I visited. I had planned to stay for a week as I hadn't been back in the previous 7-8 years, but after three days, I would have been more than happy to return to Thailand.

While it was wonderful to see my son again, and visiting friends was great, the feeling of the country was dark. Depressing. Everyone after the buck. Rediculous prices on food, 'tip boxes' on just about every counter, even when no service was rendered. People walking around with scowls on their faces, as if daring the world to attack them.
... and no one waved.

One of the daily norms in that part of the country was, when driving, you waved when another vehicle came past you or when someone was standing in their yard. You waved even though you had never seen that person before. It was friendly. But there was almost none of that any longer. People seemed to draw into themselves rather than open up to what was around them.
I might have to make another trip there very soon, and I do NOT want to go! Hopefully, I can avoid it.
