John Mearsheimer: Why Diplomacy Is Going Nowhere & Ukraine Is Doomed

All 'concessions' much too late & there's "nothing to negotiate"...

With Zelensky having much-belatedly dropped aspirations for Ukraine's NATO membership, European officials are now openly admitting what pretty much everyone knew but was afraid to say.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has newly acknowledged in fresh remarks that Ukraine's membership in the military alliance [NATO] is now obviously "out of the question" - but that the European Union now needs to provide concrete security guarantees.

ith this concession surely it should be possible for the peace loving President Putin to negotiate. Surely it shouldn't be too difficult to root out the remaining Nazis from Ukraine and to secure guarantees which protect the Russian speakers in the Donbass region. Those were President Putin's demands and they will have been basically met. I can't see any reason for President Putin not to agree to an immediate ceasefire and engage in meaningful negotiations. Although I do have this nagging feeling that this might not happen.

Sarcasm above I suppose, but Putin's maximalist goals have never changed.

Erase Ukraine as a country separate from Russia.

He says the same about Israel.

Yes. Sarcasm. I've belatedly come to the conclusion that there is no point wasting time and effort in formulating rational arguments to engage in discussions with the majority - there are a few exceptions - of Russia apologists, therefore I will now simply use sarcasm in the majority of cases.

I approve.

John Mearsheimer is an interesting case. He's a very sincere and incredibly qualified academic, but he seems to have massive blind spots about what Russia is about. I think it's because he takes a very narrow approach almost religiously and doesn't allow any other factors to enter his thinking.

What does this have to do with the war in Ukraine?

The only real security guarantee is to let Ukraine Join NATO.

I just watched the video, he claims Europe is antagonizing Russian and should peace and give Putin what he wants.   He is nuts.
