In 1930–31, Noël Coward was travelling through French Indochina — including Hanoi in Tonkin, now northern Vietnam — towards the border with Siam, now Thailand, when he is said to have conceived “Mad Dogs and Englishmen.” He reminds me of Drs. P: both have that dry, polished cleverness where the joke often sits in the phrasing rather than the punchline. That’s why I’ve added English subtitles. Yes, I can type pretty fast.
