King Sihamoni welcomes freed Cambodian soldiers

Eighteen Cambodian soldiers, detained in Thailand for months after last year’s border clashes, were formally received at Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace this week in a ceremony led by King Norodom Sihamoni and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.

The royal audience, reported by state media, saw the soldiers pay their respects and receive gifts from Their Majesties, a gesture underscoring national gratitude and recognition. Before meeting the King, the men were welcomed by Prime Minister Hun Manet and Senate President Hun Sen, who praised their endurance and marked their release as a step toward easing tensions.

Their return follows a ceasefire agreement struck between Cambodia and Thailand, hailed internationally as a crucial move to halt hostilities along the frontier. The United Nations and ASEAN partners have urged both sides to maintain dialogue and avoid further escalation, stressing that fragile progress must not be lost.

Yet concerns remain. Reports from Banteay Meanchey and Pursat provinces indicate Thai forces have installed military containers, raised flags and fenced off land inside Cambodian territory. Analysts argue such actions amount to unilateral militarisation, contravening international law and undermining ASEAN’s peace-building framework.

Phnom Penh has responded by calling for a return to the Joint Boundary Commission, insisting sovereignty must be determined through treaties and agreed demarcation, not barbed wire or flagpoles. Cambodia’s restraint, contrasted with Thailand’s contested installations, highlights the delicate balance between diplomacy and force.

For now, the King’s welcome offers a moment of relief and unity. But the broader dispute remains unresolved, with the ceasefire serving as both a symbolic breakthrough and a reminder of the fragile peace along Southeast Asia’s contested borderlands.
