Mamdani Revokes Adams' Israel Policies in Early Mayoral Acts

New York City's new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, swiftly revoked several Israel-related executive orders established by former mayor Eric Adams, redirecting city focus toward housing. He signed these orders on Thursday, only hours after his inauguration, repealing directives put in place after Adams' federal indictment on 26 September 2024. This decisive action reflects Mamdani's commitment to reshaping city policy early in his administration.

The Trump administration later dismissed the charges that Adams had faced. The revoked orders included a prohibition on divestment from Israel and an expansion of the definition of antisemitism, aligning with the standards set by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. Mamdani's critics alleged his move could fuel antisemitism, as Israel's Foreign Ministry voiced concern on social media.

In contrast, supporters, such as New York Civil Liberties Union's Donna Lieberman, applauded Mamdani for addressing what she called overly broad definitions of antisemitism and unnecessary compliance with federal immigration authorities. Mamdani, a known critic of Israeli government policies, also supports the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, pointing to his stance for equal rights.

His early actions have focused on pressing domestic issues like housing, initiating analyses for accelerating development, and creating a registry of potential city-owned building sites. These orders align with promises made during his electoral campaign. Mamdani did leave some of Adams' initiatives in place, like the Office to Combat Antisemitism, though it will undergo restructuring, reported CNN.

Key Takeaways

  • Mamdani rescinds Israel-related orders by predecessor Adams.

  • The focus shifts towards accelerating housing development.

  • Some criticise the changes as fuelling anti-Semitism.

I think Mamdani was correct to rescind the IHRA definition of antisemitism.

I think the IHRA is too broad and favours Israel. The JDA signed by hundreds of scholars is a more realistic definition of antisemitism.

Antisemitism is about Jews not Israel.

The Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism (2021) explicitly addresses comparisons between Israel and Nazi Germany:

  • Guideline 14 of the JDA states: “Comparing Israel with Nazis is not, in and of itself, antisemitic. It may be offensive, inaccurate, or polemical, but it is not antisemitic unless it is used to express hatred of Jews as Jews.”

  • In other words, the JDA distinguishes between:

    • Political speech (harsh or even offensive criticism of Israel/Zionism).

    • Antisemitism (hatred or discrimination against Jews as Jews).

⚖️ Contrast with IHRA

  • IHRA definition includes “drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis” as one of its illustrative examples of antisemitism.

  • This means under IHRA, such comparisons are generally considered antisemitic, whereas under JDA they are not automatically so.

Well done Mamdani, your job is to protect free speech in NY not police it:

I drafted the definition of antisemitism. Rightwing Jews are weaponizing it.

It's funny how the headlines everywhere, not just here, focus on the fact that Mamdani revoked various executive orders issued by Eric Adams that addressed Israel. In fact, Mamdanirepealed all executive orders by Adams dating from the time he was indicted.

The Islamic takeover moves on in Europe and the USA while most governments on both continents remain asleep. Sad and pathetic.

The FIRST thing a Socialist mayor does is revise the Zionist laws put in place by Eric Adams due to vote-buying and political pressure. At the moment, he's the only hope in America. I hope he can keep ICE out of his city.

Waiting for the Muslim Day Cares to start popping up everywhere.

Don't worry, your side are still much more represented, but you only criticise Muslims

You probably prefer Randy Fine? At least he has the balls to say it, unlike some.
