Hi. I am a 24 year old US citizen. I work for an airline so I will be travelling on stand by tickets but I will make sure the flights have open seats. I read that I need a confirmed ticket to show that I am leaving Thailand... will that be good enough? As I wont be confirmed but I am on the standby list and there will be open seats.

And also I am told that I just fill out the application on the flight before we get off the plane? Is that correct?

I do have my passport and will have money to pay for the fees. Also any other advice or input is appreciated. I will be flying from the US with a connecting flight in Japan. I hope I dont need a visa for that connecting flight. I hope I'm not trying this out too quickly as I just got my vacation and will be coming there in 10 days.

Thanks for your help

I expect the airlines will understand and allow your travel (they are likely to be the main concern). I would try to have a credit card or enough cash to purchase a confirmed ticket to Singapore or some other place if the agent does not like your airline or something. You will fill out an arrival card on aircraft and you will not enter any visa information. At Immigration they will likely ask for your boarding pass (so be sure to keep it), passport, arrival card and probably outbound ticket. Do not believe they will have a problem with you if you explain your airline staff and flying standby. It probably will not even be asked.

Boarding pass? Is that something new? I've never known any American arriving in Thailand who was asked to show the stub for the flight they just came in on.

I hope I dont need a visa for that connecting flight.

Narita is a transit airport. You will not be passing through any Immigration point, just security checks.

It has long been an intermittent requirement in Bangkok airports (which catches most travelers flat footed). Recently it has been happening rather often from reports. They want proof you arrived on an incoming flight and the correct flight information.

The problem is often with the airline check in desk, rather than immigration in Thailand.

Make sure you are neatly dressed and I doubt that the immigration will ask for a return

ticket from a westerner.
