Trump and the Greenland Deal: Cohn Says 'Over the Edge'

Donald Trump’s former economic adviser says the US will not force a Greenland ownership change. Donald Trump's proposal to gain ownership of Greenland is unlikely to succeed, according to Gary Cohn, a former top adviser to Trump.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Cohn declared, "Greenland will stay Greenland," linking the need for access to critical minerals to Trump's interest in the territory. Additionally, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent suggested a relaxed approach to the tariff threats concerning Europe and Greenland.

The issue arose from Trump's past discussions about purchasing Greenland, a move that sparked global attention. Cohn, known for his Wall Street career and tenure as director of the White House National Economic Council from 2017 to 2018, suggested that Trump's recent Greenland comments might be part of a negotiation strategy. Cohn warned that any aggressive actions involving an independent nation like Greenland, part of NATO, would be too extreme.

Reacting to Trump's tactics, Bessent urged media and global leaders to remain calm and let developments unfold naturally. He cited previous scenarios where tensions escalated unnecessarily, such as last year's US tariff impositions. Stressing the importance of not escalating with the US, Bessent differentiated the Greenland situation from past trade negotiations.

Looking to the future, US interests in Greenland may focus on increasing military presence and acquiring rare earth minerals. Cohn highlighted the strategic importance of these resources, noting that they are key to advancements in AI and quantum computing, major topics at the Davos forum. He also emphasised that Trump's tactics often aim to reach more favourable compromises.

In conclusion, while Cohn shared some reservations about the president's approach, he acknowledged potential strategic motives behind US actions. While discussions in Davos continue to shape Trump's potential Greenland deal, its geopolitical implications remain clear. The interest in Greenland aligns with ongoing discussions on tech advancements, with IBM and Google pushing the race for quantum computing innovations.

Key Takeaways

  • US president Trump's Greenland ambitions face resistance, says Gary Cohn.

  • Treasury Secretary urges patience regarding tariff threats involving Greenland.

  • Greenland's resources are vital for AI and quantum computing advancements.

Al Gore could not say whether Trump's apparent backdown from military force was influenced by Tuesday's sell-off of U.S. Treasury bonds and the stock market plunge.

''It may have also been that a lot of people who are close to him, who are more tethered to reality, convinced him that he had made a mistake, '' said Gore.

CNN's Kaitlan Collins asked the former vice president to comment on Trump's claims that he had a right to Greenland because the U.S. had put bases there when Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany, but Gore said he did not agree with that assessment.

"No, not at all," he said. "You know, when the United States was attacked on 9/11, Denmark immediately responded as part of NATO and had more per capita casualties than any other member of NATO, defending the United States against an attack.

NATO has been a tremendous foreign policy achievement for the United States, as our effort to build up other alliances to establish the rule of law, a rules-based order, all of that has benefited the United States enormously, and to try to take a wrecking ball to these alliances, the way he took a wrecking ball to the East Wing, is literally insane."

Note, I'm not ashame of Trump being President it is what it is, others countries might want to look at their own closet before feeling sorry for us! I put up with Biden and I have no problem with putting up with Trump for another 3 years.

Many of the stuff Trump is doing now has been the goal and even promise during their compaign to be President but once in did nothing kick the can down road. I laugh inside when Trump raise his concern and wishes even his cabinet and staff knows by not it isn't happening but what it has done is bring the conversation to the front which it has definitely done " that is his Art of the Deal "

like it or not! Which is to get UK and EU, off their asses and take charge before China and Russian sail their ships through the melting ice!🤣

Stop whining and pounding their chest come up with a solution instead of saying U.S. are Nazi etc.. easy to throw rocks at other countries when everyone also lives in one!

I'm not that is our system the system who voted in Biden who was is close to brain dead and was pushed into running and being President for 4 years during that period our border were opened and test of world had their hands out and ran rough shot to get what they wanted. Today he's at home clueless if he wasn't President he be in an government senior care facility wearing a pamper drooling all over himself playing bingo!

While you have an opinion please where you from what country? and let me know is it perfect.

I put up with Biden and many I didn't vote for but I respect the process enough and the office enough that no matter how much he talks no matter what he is called the system will keep him in check so that at times it is just that talk, so relax! Another 3 years he'll be the one in diapers drooling.🤣

Yes, I'm certainly ashamed, even though I voted for Harris. It bears remembering that the American voters were pretty much evenly divided in 2024. Neither candidate reached 50% of the vote. In three prsidential elections, Trump never got 50% of the vote. In two of the elections, 2016 and 2020, he lost the popular vote very badly. The actual voters rejected him soundly in both of those elections.

Had the outdated Electoral College not still been in place, Clinton would have won in 2016 and Trump would now likely just be an embarrassing footnote, spending his time cheating at golf and dreaming up more ways to grift--and, yes, I know that is what he is doing now, too.

It remains a mystery to me that he won in 2024, after the disaster of his first term, where he was awarded the title of Worst President in History. (He loves receiving awards, I don't know why he isn't embracing this one.) I think the Democrat and Independent voters who stayed home on Election Day, 2016 and 2024, not caring for either ticket, are deeply regretting it today.

Over the last 10 years for sure, not even ONE Chinese vessel was even close to Greenland waters. Russian ships, when they have to go to the Atlantic, have a few choices: between Greenland and Iceland, between Iceland and the Faer Oer, of between the Faer Oer ads Scotland. Or.. through the North Sea.

You Yanks, want to claim all inclusive Scotland and all countries around the North Sea, despite… seen all treaties, you can bring as many as defines ( war according Trump’s vision) systems in as you even want.

It is everyone opinion to voice like in sports going in we know the rules so if a call doesn't go your way why whine about it this I say go for both team or party.

So now it is the outdated Electoral college! it is in place because we have 50 States guessing maybe 10 States with the greatest population the State of California history heavy democrat population if not more than 40 million can out vote 25% of the other States with lesser population the college gives other smaller States a even playing field this make your vote in a smaller State relevant if you have a better method express it other than popular vote.

If not whether you are a Demo, Indep,Republican, don't B about the rules when it doesn't go your way change it before the game begin otherwise if one thinks it is outdated, unfair then don't play!

I've been a Demo my whole life I've held liberal, moderate and conservative views campaign for Clinton until she lost to Obama, voted for him twice but I don't endorse any President who flies around the world apologizing if that is a requirement then lots of countries leaders will be traveling. To be honest I could never vote for another black democrat for President again I believe Clinton would have done better for the black community in the end I couldn't figure out whether he was a Black Panthers or Muslim body doube LOL

Clinton, in 2016 in the bag but her arrogance stopped campaigning she only had herself to blame on top of using an illegal server should have known better she shouldn't blame anyone but herself.

When they push for Biden in his best days of running I wouldn't vote for him as clearly he had dementia that drew the line it was no better than a coup on American stupid voters I switch to an Independent prior and never look back although I still have family and friends working for a number of Democratic representatives like Pelosi, Newsom and State Senators and Assemblymen.

This dame complain about the college is near the same for the Supreme court as if one party has a lock the rules applied for both the sitting President names a replacement 8f an opening comes up no suggesting of adding or subtracting will make a difference!

People stop making excuses it is what it is relax! Deal with it Trump is President just like brain dead Biden for 4 years voters got mad and they did what our system is about voted against what they didn't like if they decided to stay home that was their freedom to do so, can't cry now!

Maybe no Chinese ship has been there, but a Chinese mining company has. Don't ignore Chinese expansion just because Trump behaves like (and in fact is) a madman bent on self glorification and grift.

I don't discriminate in those manners but everyone has a line that the draw no different that you. Even if you agree with one policy doesn't mean you are a MAGA, a racist these talking points are stupid and ignorant even from MAGA.

I don't need to wear a stupid red hat to support a policy nor do I need to wear one to feel America is great in spite of the wrongs they have done. Listening to others on Asean whining bashing American they also strong loyality to whatever country they are front strong talk but they aren't wearing any hats!

There is no other country in the world gone or done so much in 240 years, give so much as a Christian nation whenever a disaster happen in spite yes we have done wrong to others and when we try to fix and question our own generosity to strength our own nation we get dumped on for trying.

Even before I left the Democratic party was in favor just like Obama, of shrinking our government, ask for accountability of our generosity, withdrawing from UN, WHO, NATO, supporting this isn't about MAGA it is about telling others the gravy train is ending.
