Cha-am police undertook a late-night operation on January 21, detaining a man found living in an abandoned building near a popular beach viewpoint. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to enhance tourist safety in the area. Led by Kaew Kongwong, Cha-am district chief, the operation involved police, immigration officers, municipal staff, and local volunteers who searched several locations, ultimately discovering a homeless man in a vacant three-storey building.

The man, originally from Nakhon Ratchasima province, was searched and found to possess no illegal items. His information was recorded, and he was taken into custody at the Cha-am District Volunteer Defence Company 3 overnight. Authorities plan to transfer him to the Phetchaburi Provincial Office of Social Development and Human Security for assessment, aiming to provide shelter, job training, and employment opportunities.

This crackdown comes after a recent high-profile incident in Hua Hin, where a hotel staff member was killed by a homeless man with a metal pipe. The case drew national attention and led to increased efforts to eliminate illegal squatting. Officials plan to inform the building owner to secure the property, warning of potential legal repercussions for unauthorized occupation.

Kaew Kongwong stated there would be further sweeps to prevent similar incidents, ensuring the safety of locals and tourists. This approach mirrors actions taken in December when Bangkok authorities conducted a similar operation along Sukhumvit Road to manage homelessness and begging in public areas, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Cha-am authorities detained a man living in an abandoned building to enhance tourist safety.

  • The move follows a murder case in Hua Hin prompting crackdowns on illegal squatting.

  • Similar safety operations were previously conducted by Bangkok authorities in December.
