US Carrier Shoots Down Iranian Drone As Talks Teeter

A US aircraft carrier has shot down an Iranian drone in the Arabian Sea after it “aggressively approached” the warship, sharply escalating tensions just days before planned US–Iran diplomatic talks.

US Central Command said an Iranian unmanned aircraft flew toward the USS Abraham Lincoln despite repeated de-escalation warnings. An F-35C fighter jet launched from the carrier destroyed the drone to protect the ship and its crew. No US personnel were injured and no damage was reported.

Iranian state-linked media later claimed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had “lost contact” with a reconnaissance drone during a surveillance mission over international waters, saying an investigation was underway.

Hours later, the standoff intensified when two IRGC gunboats harassed a US-flagged chemical tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to board and seize the vessel while an Iranian drone flew overhead. The tanker was escorted to safety by the USS McFaul destroyer and US Air Force aircraft, forcing Iranian forces to back off.

US officials described Iran’s actions as “unprofessional and aggressive,” warning they raise the risk of miscalculation in one of the world’s most vital shipping lanes.

The incidents come as Washington rapidly expands its military footprint in the Middle East, deploying the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group alongside multiple guided-missile destroyers and advanced fighter jets.

Diplomatic efforts to defuse the crisis are faltering. Talks scheduled for Friday have hit a snag after Iran demanded changes to the location, participants and scope of negotiations, insisting discussions be limited to its nuclear program.

The White House said talks remain scheduled but stressed that “all options,” including military force, remain on the table.

First strike to the USA while cruising in someone else's territory. I don't doubt the report that the drone was doing reconnaissance. The cheek of the Iranians.

A bit rich coming from the US after boarding and stealing Venezuelan oil from tankers, and kidnapping their President.
