Ice King! Weston Storms To Historic Skeleton Gold For Team GB

Team GB have finally struck gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics after Matt Weston produced a sensational performance to win the men’s skeleton and secure Britain’s first medal of the Games.

The 28-year-old delivered a dominant display in Milan and Cortina, clocking a blistering combined time of 3:43.33 to finish 0.88 seconds ahead of Germany’s Axel Jungk. His final run of 55.61 seconds sealed victory in emphatic fashion.

It marks Great Britain’s first Winter Olympics medal since the women’s curling team took gold four years ago — and Weston has now become the first British man ever to win Olympic gold in skeleton.

Over four flawless runs, Weston was untouchable. Calm at the top of the track and razor sharp through every corner, he never looked like surrendering his advantage. When his winning time flashed up, the emotion poured out as he broke down in tears at the bottom of the track.

“It means everything,” Weston told BBC Sport afterwards. “It means a hell of a lot to me personally. I’ve worked so hard for this. But everyone back home — my fiancée, my family, my friends — everyone who has sacrificed everything for this.

“I’ve missed funerals, birthdays, everything for this moment. It feels amazing.

“Even if you’re not part of my close circle, if you play the National Lottery you are supporting me as well, so thank you so much. Hopefully I did you proud.”

BBC commentator John Hunt captured the scale of the moment as he roared: “Matt Weston is in a completely different league. It is a life-changing moment.

“He has done it with a flourish. Wonderful, wonderful moment for him. That was sensational — dominant throughout. Quite, quite spectacular and very deserved.”

Two-time Olympic skeleton champion Lizzy Yarnold also hailed the performance as near-perfect.

“Every single one of the four runs were absolute perfection,” she said. “Incredibly impressive from Matt Weston.

“What stands out for me is each and every time he stood at the start block he was looking down the track, he excelled, he accelerated, he was so focused. I really can’t find the words to describe how incredibly impressed I am.”

After seven days without a podium finish, Team GB finally have their breakthrough moment — and in Weston, they may have found a new Winter Games star.

I have done many things in life, but I have to say, skeleton is on the top of my list when it comes to speed and g forces. Wow, my first run down the olympic track at Lillehammer was the longest minute I had in my life up to that date. I wasnt fast enough to compete since you need to be a quite good sprinter, but It was an incredible experience lying flat on your tummy, head first two inches above the ice going 120km/h
