US and Kurdish militias weigh new front against Iran

Washington is in talks with Iranian Kurdish militias over a potential ground offensive inside Iran, opening the prospect of a volatile new front in an already widening war.

Sources say Kurdish factions based in Iraqi Kurdistan have consulted US officials on whether — and how — to strike Iranian security forces in the country’s west.

Plot to Exploit Tehran’s Turmoil

The discussions come as US and Israeli strikes hammer Iranian targets and senior regime figures lie dead. Kurdish leaders believe coordinated attacks could weaken Tehran’s grip and create space for unrest in major cities.

A final decision has not been taken. But the militias have reportedly sought US military backing, including possible CIA assistance with weapons and intelligence.

The Central Intelligence Agency declined to comment. The White House and Pentagon have yet to respond.

Erbil in the Middle

Leaders in Erbil and Baghdad are understood to have been in contact with the Trump administration. Any cross-border operation would likely require significant US logistical and intelligence support.

American forces already operate from bases in Erbil as part of the coalition against Islamic State. Whether they would directly back a push into Iran remains unclear.

A Region on Edge

An armed Kurdish incursion could destabilise more than Iran. It risks energising separatist movements among Iran’s Baluch minority and unsettling Pakistan’s restive border regions.

Turkey, which has long battled Kurdish insurgents and remains wary of armed Kurdish groups near its frontier, would also be watching closely. Ankara has previously threatened military action against Kurdish forces in Syria.

For Washington, the calculation is stark: open a pressure point inside Iran — or risk igniting a regional chain reaction that proves far harder to contain.

Let's see what we have here: The Kurds were alway pro-western. Ejecting the IS from N/E Syria just as a last example.

All they want is their own "state". Nobody willing to give it to them. They were "let down" by the (western) world time after time.

The Kurds are the "poor devils" of the world.

Co-operating with the west (the US) once more? As soon as the "deed is done", they will be let down once more.

Disposable people the US uses and discards.

The Kurds would be wise to remember the past , they have been

shafted by the USA ,several times already ,USA is happy to bomb,

but putting boots on the ground ,would mean body bags returning

home , and Trump 🤡 would not like that , or the USA people would

not , Donald would not care a bit,

Agreed, on a whim by trump they'll be left high and dry.

Kurds are hated like Jews. Move them to Palestine and kick out the others.

The entry of the Kurds into the war could have a significant effect.  Kurdish forces don't show a lot of restraint  and the civilian population of Iran is terrified of them.  I imagine there would be 100% civilian flight from any area the Kurds invaded, which could only contribute to the pressure for regime change.

Iranian Kurdish forces, based in Iraq, are preparing armed units that could be sent into Iran, potentially with U.S. support, in an insurgency that would open a new front against the Iranian government.

Though the White House has denied that it agreed to any plan for the Kurds to launch an insurgency in Iran, the United States has a long history of working with Kurdish militias around the region.

Pro-Western? When it suits them. The PKK is strictly Marxist-Leninist. The KDP consider themselves victors in the Kurdish civil war. The KDP who run Iraqi Kurdistan have a track record of blocking voting when it suits them. They are not democrats. I suspect encouraging the formation of a Kurdish state will result is a failed narco-state in perpetual conflict with its neighbours, like the Karen in Burma.

The Kurds aren't all that poor; that sympathy shuld be reserved for the Karen people, the South Sudanese, Biafra.

Why not give the Kurds U.S. citizenship first? They might eventually prove more useful to the U.S. than expected.

The US has always been an undependable ally for these folks, and with Trump you can multiply that lack of dependability by a hundred times. He wouldn't know loyalty if it bit him on his enormous ankles.
