The Lao National Assembly has approved a railway project connecting Thakhek in Khammouane Province to the Mu Gia border in Vietnam, aiming to enhance Laos' connectivity to global markets. This development is part of a build-operate-transfer model and is expected to significantly impact Laos' integration into the East–West Economic Corridor. The move marks a significant step towards transforming Laos from a landlocked nation to a more connected hub in the region.

During its 10th legislature's inaugural session, which concluded on March 27, the NA also approved the national socio-economic development plan for 2026-2030. The session adopted organizational structures for the NA, government, and key state agencies. Additionally, a legislative programme for 2026-2030 was endorsed, entailing the drafting of 19 new laws and amendments to 72 existing laws within critical sectors like administration, justice, and national defense-security.

Lawmakers expressed optimism about the transformational potential of the railway project. The project is expected to boost trade and economic activity between Laos and Vietnam, enhancing cooperation in the region. This initiative is crucial for the Lao government's long-term strategy to improve infrastructure and promote regional integration.

Looking forward, the project's implementation will be closely monitored, as it represents an essential component of Laos' development plans. The approval comes alongside the ratification of work plans for significant state bodies, reflecting the government's commitment to comprehensive development and legislative reforms.
