Have you ever had a close call on a hotel balcony ? Anyone ?

I never have. Not even close. I was staying at the Sandman on Davey street in Vancouver BC. It has these small sketchy looking balconies. I just locked the door and didn't go out there. It just didn't look safe and I was drinking.

We hear this myth about all of these low railings that people accidentally or almost fall over. As if people are blind or something and just walk onto a balcony and just pretend the railing is the height that they think it should be instead of taking note of what the height actually is.

Even if the railing is a foot lower than normal (they aren't) is that not your cue to take even more caution ?

I've never stayed a hotel where I thought - woah - that railing is low... Pished up people will find a way to flirt with danger - sitting on a balcony railing etc... feels cool to flirt with danger

Just had a couple of nights at a modern hotel in Jomtien, and the thin glass balcony surround looked a bit delicate and it's height was about mid thigh for me. But it was so obviously risky I didn't

Far from a safe height - was under 1 meter, which would be illegal in most countries.

Here, it's mostly suicide or drunk reckless antics

Pished up people will find a way to flirt with danger - sitting on a balcony railing etc... feels cool to flirt with danger while having a spliff or smoking a cigarette with mates on a balcony...

Dunk people do silly things.

But - a lot of the falls are likely suicide - check the bank balance of the decreased and I'm sure that tells an underlying story.

The same low glass panel was used on the rooftop bar, where drunk people may be tempted to lean out, so I can see how accidents could happen.

Not in the hotels I've stayed in, most don't have balconies.

It is common in the older style apartment buildings, I have seen them in a few of the ex girlfriends accommodation.

Unless you post the height with a measuring tape, I wont believe you.

International standards for commercial is a hair over a meter. International standards for residential is a hair under a meter.

The standard hotel balcony rail height is typically a minimum of 42 inches (107 cm), as they fall under commercial building codes (like the International Building Code - IBC) that require higher guardrails for safety in high-traffic areas. Residential codes require a minimum of 36 inches.

I'm 194cm

Railings hit me about mid thigh....Stair & park railings are usually built for Thai sized people....

For me it's a badly placed tipping fulcrum that I don't go near....Just to err toward safety.....

I'm only 180 cm, but many hotel balconies in Thailand are still at a height where I'd fall over if I leant on the rail.

When I first moved into my apartment in Asoke, I leaned over my railing to look at 2 birds fighting on the balcony below mine. Had the terrazzo been wet and my shoes lost traction, there's a good chance I'd have gone over. That realization spooked me, and I pay attention to railing height wherever I stay in LOS.

Lots of hotels have sub-standard railing heights. Several of the hotels I stayed in had built up the railing height as an afterthought. Mostly in Jomtien and Pattaya (not so coincidentally, I think).

Ah so you don't pay attention in other countries ?

Find pictures of these abnormally low rails. Otherwise it didn't happen. And you are blaming your own reckless idiocy on someone else

Amazing that I'm reading this now, because just 10 minutes ago some drunken prat next door fell off the 1st floor balcony and smashed down onto the metal roof of that guesthouse. He slid down onto the ground and then just walked off.....

Perhaps he was so drunk that he forgot that his guesthouse had stairs......

No need to be so harsh, Jones.

NO, I'm not an idiot.

I have many years ago I took a girl to my room and ordered room service drinks and had the first shower .When I come out of the shower I caufgt her going through my bag where I had hidden my money. I was so angry that I picked her up and threatened to throw her over the balcony. At that moment room service arrived and her over the balcony. At that moment the drinks arrived and I had to put her down.Thats what you call a close call.....We were in an apartment on the first floor.

Yeah I do not suffer violent tendencies.... you should seek help before you murder someone.

You hid the money in your bag ? That's foolish. You should be more creative than that

For the most part, women aren't going to steal some cash from you. I had one Jamaican prostitute who I swore stole my fancy sunglasses. Later I found that they fell behind the TV. I have always heard these stories and have always taken precautions , but I have never had the hint of one stealing from me. Maybe it is just my charm.

Couple of close encounters in my younger days but no close calls. Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I have had a close call a few times over the years in various locations around the world.

A couple of times after drinking a ton of beer while sitting on the balcony admiring the view. I had forgotten which way the door opened and nearly pissssed in my trousers, but at the last minute worked things out in my drunken stupor and managed to get to the toilet in time.

There would be nothing worse than sitting in a wet pool of slash having forgotten how to change my trousers as I could not remember which legs goes where.

Never. But someone earlier in the thread mentioned glass railings. Those are the ones that would give me the willies. I wouldn't dare lean on one of them. Spouse and I were watching a Youtube video of a new housing project and the staircase and upper level overlooking the first floor had glass railings. On the upper level, posted every few feet were signs stuck to the glass railing warning not to lean on the glass.

I'm thinking, hang on, who would want to live in a place with such delicate unsafe railings? Suppose you accidently trip or your kids are horsing around and one of them stumbles into the railing? Over they go and that's that? No thanks. I know a traditional wood or metal railing can also fail but I feel more comfortable with one of those than glass.

In my reular hotel in Bangkok they closed the balcony door with rails and the window too can just open a little bitt Years ago i stayed at a hotel in sukumvit soi 12.Me and my exgf sat on the balcony when we saw a foreigner jumped from 31st floor in a neighbour building. I never forget that sigth.

Twice. Both times in older hotels in Bangkok. I was totally sober both times and walked out on the balcony and leaned against the railing and almost fell over. The railing are designed for short Asians, not tall Westerners. I’m 190 cm and the railings were lower than my center of gravity. I don’t recall seeing a single article about a short person falling off a balcony. That’s why railings on newer hotels are higher.

So you didn't visually notice that it was lower and decide extra caution was needed ?

I am getting lots of downvotes for challenging this dopey narrative that doesn't even make sense.

Try challenging without being so snarky and insulting about it each and every time. Perhaps your luck will improve.
